Folwell Drive
‘Family-oriented’ ranch-styles, split-levels and Colonials
According to Martin, Folwell Drive has “Larger homes, in general,” and many are “family-oriented” with upwards of three bedrooms on ¼ and ½-acre lots. There’s enough space for play structures, flower gardens and even makeshift ice rinks when temperatures dip below freezing. The majority of properties date back to the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s, and ranch-styles, split-levels and Colonial-inspired homes are dominant. There are also 2000s-era traditional homes with prominent gables. Prices range from around $400,000 to upwards of $500,000 for older houses, whereas newer properties typically fall between $600,000 and $900,000. Most have attached two-car garages that protect cars from Rochester snow. The city gets close to 50 inches every year, and local kids are well-practiced in the art of snow fort, snowmen and snowball-making.Independent studies and community membership opportunities at Mayo High
Martin says Folwell Drive is also known for its proximity to top-rated schools like Folwell Elementary, which receives an A-minus from the educational review site, Niche. It’s within walking distance for some students along 6th Street, whereas the C-plus-rated Willow Creek Middle School is about 10 minutes from the neighborhood via car. Mayo High School, meanwhile, also has an A-minus grade from Niche, and there are nearly 15 Advanced Placement classes to choose from. Close to 90 classes count towards Honors Diplomas upon graduation. Some students also pursue independent studies and mentorships within the larger Rochester community, gaining career experience while also earning class credit.Plummer House gardens, local playgrounds and Rochester Golf & Country Club amenities
The Rochester Parks & Recreation Department manages the Plummer House, a museum and event venue just outside the neighborhood. The mansion was built by Mayo Clinic co-founder Dr. Henry Stanley Plummer in the 1920s and today hosts weddings, graduations, anniversaries, holiday parties and staff retreats. “We also have an open house where people from the public can come in and take a self-guided tour,” adds Kelly Evans, Office Services Coordinator at the Parks & Recreation Department. In the springtime, she says the well-maintained grounds are popular for Mayo High School prom pictures, and “The fountains are running and everything is blooming and the foliage is bright,” in June and July. It’s her favorite time of year to explore the gardens. At the neighborhood’s southernmost border, find Baihly Heights Tot Lot, home to a small playground, and kids can also head to the taller climbing structures at Younge Park. Some will invest in memberships at the Rochester Golf & Country Club, founded around the same time as the Plummer House was built. Yearly fees grant access to an outdoor pool, upscale dining, a fitness center and a golf course designed by A.W. Tillinghast and restored in 2020.2nd Street restaurants, Miracle Mile groceries and the Apache Mall
Along with Canadian Honker, a Rochester staple for the last four decades, other local favorites include Tinns Grilled Philly Steak Sub, which recently reopened along 2nd Street, and Red Cow, where the Breakfast Burger is smothered in peanut butter and topped with an egg over-easy. After work, sample everything from Nitro White Stouts to Hazy IPAs on Thesis Beer Project’s outdoor patio, and sign up for karaoke on Tuesday nights. Across the street, Beetle’s Bar and Grill is a family restaurant with live music every Saturday night. When it comes time for groceries, drive to the Fresh Thyme Market in the Miracle Mile Shopping Center. Or make a trip to the Apache Mall, which is bordered by a Trader Joe’s and Hy-Vee Grocery Store.Free concerts, Discovery Square and weekly farmers markets
In September, Cascade Lake Park hosts a free community celebration complete with live performances, visits from the Bookmobile — a traveling library truck — and food courtesy of local food stops like the Taco Lab and True Smoke BBQ. There are more events downtown, and, according to Evans, “The Discovery Square area, which is mainly part of the Mayo Clinic, is becoming a huge attraction, bringing in so many visitors.” She also points to events near Peace Plaza like Thursdays Downtown, a weekly outdoor market in June, July and August, and free performances — part of the “Music on the Plaza” series — between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on weekdays during the summer. On Wednesday afternoons, shop for fresh-grown tomatoes and artisanal bread at the Discovery Walk Farmers Market or stroll through the Saturday Market near the Olmsted County Fairgrounds.85 miles of paved city trails
Public art and local flora line approximately 85 miles of paved trails throughout the city. Most recently, Rochester has invested millions of dollars in the Discovery Walk project, a pedestrian parkway intended to ease transit between Mayo Clinic campuses, Soldiers Field Veterans Memorial, Downtown universities and shopping centers. From Folwell Drive, it’s about a mile and a half to St. Mary’s and just over 2 miles to the Mayo Clinic’s Methodist Campus. Parking downtown can be difficult, and, whenever possible, hospital commuters will rely on the city’s public bus system, Mayo Clinic shuttles or even bicycles. The Rochester International Airport, a small facility that offers direct flights to Minneapolis/Saint Paul and Chicago, is about 10 miles south along U.S. Highway 63.
