Folwell
Pre-World War II homes on sloped streets
Folwell's residential areas are primarily limited to 14th- 15th- and 16th- Avenues, directly west of St. Mary's. The hospital — established in the late 19th century — predates most homes, but construction is still on the older side. Tudor-inspired cottages, bungalows, Colonials and Cape Cods date back to the years prior to and directly following World War II, and sale prices tend to hover between $330,000 and $565,000. Streets are sloped and lined with sidewalks and trees. Some homeowners hang basketball hoops over garage doors, which sit at the end of long driveways. The neighborhood is also home to multi-story apartment complexes like The Berkman, which also offers short-term units available for hospital patients and their families.2nd Street restaurants and Miracle Mile shopping
"We are definitely known for our coconut cake," says Wilschek, referencing Canadian Honker's most popular menu item. "It is the owner's mother's recipe and we sell thousands and thousands of pieces." The restaurant has been going strong for the past 40 years and Friday evenings mean all-you-can-eat jumbo shrimp and fried walleye platters. Another local favorite, according to Realtor Andrew Atwood, owner and branch manager at Century 21, is Tinn's on 2nd Street. It recently reopened across from St. Mary's and restaurant-goers can pick up philly cheesesteaks or chicken subs on their lunch breaks. The Miracle Mile Shopping Mall is home to a Fresh Thyme Market, a go-to for grocery runs; while pastries are served warm at Don Panchos Bakery next door.Concurrent enrollment and career readiness at Mayo High School
From pre-kindergarten through Grade 5, students can walk to Folwell Elementary, which receives an A-minus grade on the educational review site, Niche. The school is known for hosting the Folwell Follies, an annual talent show. The next stop is Willow Creek Middle School, which has a C-plus rating and Mayo High School which earns an A-minus grade. Teens in the Rochester Public School System have the opportunity to earn concurrent college and high school credits at Riverland Community College or through the Rochester Career and Technical College, while the P-TECH program allows students to accumulate career experience through partnerships with major Rochester employers like IBM and the Mayo Clinic.Historic water towers and public-use golf courses
Standing tall in St. Mary's Park is a water tower dating back to the 1920s. Named on the National Register of Historic Places, Mayo Clinic students' study in its shadow when the weather heats up each spring. A few blocks north, Kutzky Park features a large playground and tennis courts, and many also explore the banks of Cascade Creek, which flows directly into Cascade Lake. Here there's also a small, sandy beach that contours the water. A recently renovated playground looks out onto the designated swimming area. Children and seniors receive discounted rates at Soldier's Field Golf Course, which is open to the public, and there's also a seasonal outdoor skating rink and a swimming pool — complete with winding water slides and diving boards — in the surrounding park.Mutual aid and community events through United Way of Olmsted County
At the end of October, families visit the parking lot outside United Way of Olmsted County for an event called "Trunk or Treat." Cars are filled with candy and volunteers also bring along non-perishable goods and toiletries to donate to families in need. According to Grace Pesch, the Vice President of Community Impact at United Way, the organization lends out its space for community events like this throughout the year. "We are a non-profit agency that ensures people have what they need to reach their full potential. We do that through community partnerships," she says, adding, "For example, we work with area schools to provide backpacks and school supplies to students. We fund local food shelves and other programs that really meet those basic needs."A county fair and 'Thursdays Downtown'
In July, the Olmsted County Fair Grounds fills with carnival rides and vendors who sell cheese curds and fried dough from brightly colored booths. Barn-shows feature cows, sheep and chickens from local farms and admission is free. A trip into Downtown, provides the opportunity to check out the circulating exhibits at the Rochester Art Center or folks can buy tickets to watch a professional wrestling match at the Mayo Civic Center. There are also live band performances and handmade art for sale near Peace Plaza every week from June through August, part of the city's "Thursdays Downtown" festival.Public buses stop outside St. Mary's Hospital
From Folwell, it's just over a mile into Rochester's Downtown. Some will opt to walk or bike along 2nd Street, while cars travel by way of Civic Center Drive. When it snows, drivers know to look out for seasonal parking ordinances. Public buses — namely the 408, 409 or 419 — stop outside St. Mary's Hospital on their way to the Downtown Transit Center Station. There's also a shuttle service between Mayo Clinic campuses for patients and employees. Rochester's small international airport is about 9 miles away from Folwell via Highways 52 and 63. Book direct flights to larger airports like Minneapolis and Chicago/O'Hare.
