‘Minnesota Nice’ in Southwest Rochester
Just outside of Foxcroft, a suburban neighborhood about 4 miles from Downtown Rochester, is the History Center of Olmsted County. On the grounds, school field trips and families tour an 1860s-era log cabin, stop by the ever-evolving exhibit hall and even use old-fashioned blackboard slates in a one-room school house. The center hands out keys so visitors can unlock the buildings at their own discretion. “When you’re done, we just ask you bring them back,” says Education Director Valerie Wassmer. “We’re very trusting here in Minnesota,” she adds, noting, “It’s a real thing: Minnesota nice. It’s how it’s been here for a while.” Foxcroft, with its carefully landscaped lawns and large single-family homes, is nestled between relics from Rochester’s 19th-century agrarian days and Mayo Clinic innovation. On the outskirts of Downtown Rochester — including in subdivisions like Foxcroft — most residents either work at the hospital or live with someone who works there. “It’s not the typical community where people grew up here, although you’ll certainly find that too,” says Kelly Evans, Office Coordinator at the Department of Parks and Recreation, explaining that “A lot of people living here are Mayo employees.”
Foxcroft welcomes you with lush greenery and charming homes in this peaceful Rochester gem.

1990s-era homes on well-maintained lots
Foxcroft residents hire professional teams to keep their grass and shrubs trimmed, and cul-de-sacs are quiet enough for neighborhood kids to run around with little supervision. “Foxcroft has been around for 25 years or so. It's not a new area by any chance. It’s evolved since it started, and it’s fully developed now,” says Amy Lantz, who’s worked in the Rochester real estate industry for over 30 years. She now owns Amy’s Fire Realty. “It's pretty centrally located and it’s only a few minutes from the hospital, and Southwest Rochester is usually occupied by doctors.” The majority of homes were built in the 1990s and, according to Lantz, feature Traditional and Colonial-inspired architectural detailing: steep gables, grand entryways and even cobblestone driveways. Homes sit on quarter acre lots, and prices range from around $525,000 to about $775,000. Larger estates with backyard swimming pools can sometimes sell for close to $2 million. Two and three-car garages are standard, protecting from snow and ice.

A private country club, public parks and paved trails
Rochester’s intersecting network of paved trails spans 85 miles, connecting public parks to destinations like Rochester Golf & Country Club. Members receive access to an aquatics center, a kids club and a golf course, which has undergone a steady series of upgrades since it was first designed by A.W. Tillinghast in the early 20th century. Fox Valley Park anchors the neighborhood and features a playground, baseball fields and tennis courts. There’s also Younge Park to the east. Landscaped grounds surround the History Center of Olmsted County, and the Zumbro River feeds into Mayowood Lake near the Mayowood Mansion. To the north, a section of Cascade Lake is sectioned off for swimmers in the summer, and fishermen stand on the pier in the hopes of catching Northern Pike.

A creepy doll contest, Days of Yesteryear and vintage baseball at the history center
Every October, residents in Foxcroft and surrounding neighborhoods cast votes in the “Creepy Doll Contest” at the History Center of Olmsted County. “We have a collection of creepy dolls, and people can come and vote for the creepiest of all,” says Wassmer, adding, “It’s carnival theme this year.” Other exhibits feature Mayo Clinic artifacts, and the Mechanical History Roundtable sponsors an event called Days of Yesteryear. “It’s really a step back in time to the mid-1800s,” notes Wassemer. “They have a lot of mechanical demonstrations for people to see the old farming techniques, and vendors do old-fashioned crafting.” On select summer Sundays, families watch vintage baseball, or “base ball,” as it was once called. They go by Civil War-era rules, which means bare-handed catches.
Foxcroft's proximity to local museums makes it a great family-friendly neighborhood.
