Single-family homes border public parks 6 miles from Med City
Picnic benches, playgrounds and paved trails are surrounded by single-family homes in Northwest, a Rochester neighborhood just over 6 miles outside the city. “Northwest Rochester is a quiet, family-friendly community,” says Sara Vix, a Realtor with Keller Williams, adding that there’s “Easy access to bike trails and walking paths from just about anywhere.” Although it’s a primarily residential neighborhood, one with very little thru traffic and plenty of sidewalk space for walking the dog, there’s the occasional community church and public bus stop. Some residents also operate small businesses out of their homes—daycares, pet grooming services and piano lessons—but a more significant percentage are employed by the Mayo Clinic. Since its founding in the late 19th Century, the hospital and medical research center has quickly grown into the city’s largest employer, sponsoring annual events like FORWARD Park Concerts, an outdoor music series in select locations across the city. “There’s plenty of new construction happening in the northwest area for folks who prefer a new build,” says Vix. In other words, as Mayo continues to expand with the onset of multi-billion-dollar projects like DMC (Destination Medical Center), so do suburban outposts like Northwest.

A mix of 1990s bi-levels and new construction
Northwest is comprised mostly of single-family homes built during the 1990s and early 2000s, and sloped streets mean some properties even have distant city views. There’s a mix of bi- and split-level homes with traditional white trim and decorative shutters, and prices range from around $330,000 to $600,000. Trees planted during the early days of the neighborhood shade driveways, and basketball hoops and backyard trampolines are common. Traditional and ranch-inspired new construction with attached three-car garages can be found in the neighborhood’s northwest corner, and prices range from around $650,000 to upwards of $800,000. Some sit on nearly half an acre.

Shopping centers and fast-casual restaurants along Highway 52
Those living in Northwest enjoy easy access to Highway 52, which is lined with convenience stores, used car dealerships and larger shopping centers. In Northwest Plaza, less than a mile outside the neighborhood, retail options include Walmart Supercenter, Plato’s Closet for used clothing and Sam’s Club for wholesale shopping. Texas Roadhouse is a favorite for fast-casual sit-down meals, and The Hyderabad Indian Grill is popular for takeout and delivery. Just south of Northern Hills Golf Course, some prefer shopping for groceries at Hy-Vee, and Vix also recommends North Mr. Pizza, which has been perfecting its crust-to-sauce ratio since the 1960s.

Neighborhood playgrounds, the Douglas State Trail and a public golf course
Paved trails wind through Summite Pointe Park, which borders some of the neighborhood’s newest construction in the northwest corner. There’s also North Park and White Oaks Park, both of which have playgrounds, and the Douglas State Trail extends over 12 miles to the west. Bike repair and picnic stations are available along the route, and those with permits can ride horses in the summer and snowmobiles in the winter. Vix also highlights the Northern Hills Golf Course, just over a mile outside the neighborhood. “This is a city course that offers 18 holes and a clubhouse for dining,” she says, and golfers can book private lessons. Head Golf Professional Mike Manahan says the course is at its busiest during the months of June, July and August. Rochester accumulates around 50 inches of snow during its long winter—November through March—and residents rely on indoor gyms and community centers. “To keep active year-round, you can find the Recreation Center, 125 Live, Rochester Athletic Center, and Roca Climbing & Fitness,” recommends Vix.

CTECH programs and Mayo Clinic mentorships at John Marshall High School
Depending on their address within Northwest, students in prekindergarten through fifth grade can attend George W. Gibbs Elementary or Sunset Terrace Elementary, which received a B-plus and a B-minus on Niche, respectively. They come together for sixth grade at John Adams Middle, which has a C-plus Niche grade, and finish their public education at John Marshall High, which earns a B. John Marshall offers classes in JavaScript, Therapeutic Medicine and Animal Science, which are part of a larger CTECH program, and some upperclassmen even seek Mayo Clinic research mentorships.
Escape rooms, free concerts and outdoor festivals
Bordering Highway 52 to the east is The Escape Challenge, a 60-minute escape room popular for birthday and bachelorette parties. Between June and August, parks in each city ward host free outdoor concerts, part of the FORWARD Park series. Families can walk to White Oaks Park with packed picnic baskets, blankets and beach chairs to enjoy live music sponsored by the Mayo Clinic. Near Sam’s Club, The Village Community Garden, managed by the Village Agricultural Cooperative, hosts F.A.R.M. Fest, a fundraiser with live music, artisan booths and opportunities to sample global cuisine.
The bus is a convenient way to get around the Northwest area.
Park and Ride and Highway 52 to the Twin Cities
According to Vix, most Mayo Clinic commuters drive to work or use the city’s park-and-ride lots. There are also several public bus stops throughout Northwest, and bus rides downtown can take around 20 minutes. The Rochester International Airport, serviced by Delta and American Eagle Airlines, is about 14 miles away from the neighborhood along Highway 52, which also leads to the Twin Cities.
