A residential Rochester neighborhood surrounded by protected wildlife
Over 8 miles of trails wind throughout Quarry Hill Park, and hikers search for fossilized gastropods in the limestone. It’s evidence of the days when Rochester, Minnesota, was still under the sea. Amy Lantz, a Rochester local and owner of Amy’s Fire Realty, describes Quarry Hill Park as “a breath of fresh air” and “an area made for the nature buffs” just 2 miles from the Mayo Clinic’s downtown campus. Quarry Hill West, a residential neighborhood bordering the 330-acre park, is on the older side. Modest homes date back to the 1950s, and the Mayo Clinic employs a good portion of residents. It’s what first drew Lantz to the city. “The reason why I started my real estate business here was the IBM and Mayo,” she says. Quarry Hill West represents a peaceful escape from ambulance sirens and hospital towers while still being a short bus ride — or even bike ride — away.

Mid-century homes on compact lots
Quarry Hill West is mostly made up of mid-century single-family homes on parallel streets. Ranch-style houses, Bungalows, cottages and Cape Cods are dominant. Lot sizes are relatively compact, under a quarter acre. Investment properties start under $200,000, but the majority of homes range from around $250,000 to $300,000. Renovated split-levels on larger lots — which can span over 2 acres on dead-end streets — can sell for upwards of $400,000. In the winter, residents are responsible for shoveling the sidewalks in front of their homes, and cars park in tuck-under or detached garages.

An educational nature center, boat rentals and a public swimming pool
Quarry Hill West is coveted not only for its proximity to the Mayo Clinic but also for its closeness to public parks and nature preserves. The Quarry Hill Nature Center, which sits at the center of a 330-acre park, hosts day camps during the summer and regular school field trips during the academic year. Kids can visit the butterfly garden, go bug hunting along the walking trails or even tour the sandstone caves. Trails are ideal for cross-country skiing, and canoers and fishermen can head to the banks of the Children’s Pond, where turtles like to sun themselves on flat rocks. Silver Creek flows west into Silver Lake Park, where locals can rent paddle boats, kayaks and even tandem bicycles. There’s also the Silver Lake Swimming Pool, which typically opens to the public in June, and a large playground in Three Links Park Nearby.

Free outdoor concerts in the summer
When the weather heats up in Rochester, live music is plentiful. Locals can pack picnics and folding chairs for free outdoor concerts, many of which are sponsored by the Mayo Clinic. There are FORWARD Park Concerts on select Wednesday nights, and Lantz also recommends the Riverside Music Series in Mayo Park next to the Civic Center. The large-scale venue hosts touring bands, comedians and even professional bull riders throughout the year. Or listen to music at Thursdays Downtown, a weekly, day-long market around Peace Plaza in June, July and August. The same plaza fills with Rochesterians in February for Social-ICE, a winter event complete with ice sculptures, DJs and themed drinks.

Public buses, bike trails and
“If you went up in the highest building in Rochester, you’d look out and see basically a bowl,” says Lantz, adding, “There are trees around the outside, and it dips around the middle.” The outskirts of “Med City” are still largely rural, and it’s about 90 miles — or an hour and a half — along U.S. Highway 52 to reach larger cities like Minneapolis and Saint Paul. Because parking is notoriously tricky near Peace Plaza and University Square, many commuters rely on Rochester’s Public Transit System or the city’s network of paved bike paths. Hospital employees and patients can also use the free shuttle service to travel between the Mayo Clinic’s Methodist and St. Mary’s campuses. Rochester’s small international airport is just over 10 miles from Quarry Hill West via Broadway Avenue and U.S. Highway 63, and the facility offers year-round direct flights to the Twin Cities and Chicago.
