South Pointe Drive Southwest
Neighborhood in Rochester, Minnesota
Olmsted County 55902
Single-family New Traditionals and townhouses flanked by sidewalks
Architectural styles in South Pointe Drive Southwest are reflective of the late 1990s and early 2000s at which time most of the homes were built. “They’re typically Traditional single-family homes, but there are also some townhomes and fourplexes,” says Ugland. The neighborhood’s largest properties sit on half-acre or even three-quarter-acre lots, and prospective buyers will find the occasional in-ground pool, trampoline or garden plot out back. Most homes here have two- or three-car garages, and wide driveways that leave plenty of room for vehicles, or a basketball hoop. “In South Pointe, you’re looking at price points from the lower $200,000s for some of the townhouses to upwards of $600,000 for single-family homes,” explains Ugland; the majority of detached properties fall between $340,000 and $500,000. There are sidewalks throughout the neighborhood, and neighbors like to keep their front lawns trimmed.Honors credit through Mayo Clinic research at Mayo High
Students living in South Pointe Drive Southwest can attend Rochester or Stewartville Public Schools. Bamber Valley Elementary, part of Rochester’s Public Schools District, is 6 miles north and has a B grade from Niche. Willow Creek Middle, which has C-plus, is also 6 miles away via Highway 63, and the A-minus-rated Mayo High, Rochester’s top-ranked High School, is about 7 miles outside the neighborhood. There are specialized Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services in all three schools, and Mayo students can earn honors credit through independent studies or community mentorships; some upperclassmen pursue research opportunities at the Mayo Clinic.Fresh tacos, a growing food truck scene and decades-old staples
According to Ugland, Rochester’s food scene has changed dramatically over the past decade. “There’s a lot of small, family-run places and more niche-style restaurants. You’ll find anything from typical American foods to specific cultural foods,” he says. Popular stops include Los Arcos Kitchen & Cantina South, known for its fresh street tacos. “Food trucks have really blown up in recent years,” adds the Realtor; they serve everything from brick oven pizza to shaved ice, and there’s also the Bleu Duck Truck, aka “The Duck Truck,” an offshoot of the upscale Downtown eatery. Ugland also makes sure to highlight “oldies and goodies” in Rochester that have “been around forever,” like Canadian Honker, found across the street from the Mayo Clinic’s Saint Mary’s Campus, John Hardy’s BBQ, Grandma’s Kitchen and Mr. Pizza. Residents can pick up groceries at Target, less than 3 miles away, or drive to other options like Trader Joe’s and Hy-Vee closer to the Apache Mall.A fishing reservoir and public-use golf courses
South Pointe Park, home to a playground and open field space, anchors the neighborhood, and fishermen can head to Willow Creek Reservoir Park a mile away. A rugged, 2-mile walking trail encircles the park’s central lake. It’s also popular with bird watchers, especially those hoping to spot bald eagles coasting on the wind currents. Nearby golf courses include Oak Summit and Willow Creek, where locals can join leagues or invest in private lessons. Both are open to the public, and tee times are reserved in advance online. The Med City Marathon in May and go-karting in the summer
About 3 miles outside the neighborhood, next to national retailers like Target, Lowes and Old Navy, locals can catch a movie at the Marcus Rochester Cinema. In May, runners congregate near the Rochester International Airport for the Med City Marathon, which follows a route that winds north toward Downtown. There’s live music at the Finish Line Festival, and some complete the race on small relay teams. Skyline Raceway, about 4 miles outside the neighborhood, has attracted go-karters since the 1960s, and owner El Bishop says there are “a lot of regulars,” aka families that come back summer after summer to enjoy the S-shaped track. “Another huge attraction in Rochester is our Soldiers Field Veterans Memorial,” says Ugland, adding, “They just opened a brand-new water park.”Proximity to Rochester International Airport
“A lot of Mayo employees [living in South Pointe] will actually do Park and Rides,” says Ugland, explaining that “Only a small percentage take mass transit into town” due to its somewhat limited schedule. Peace Plaza, representing the heart of Rochester’s Downtown, is about 7 miles—or 15 minutes—north along Broadway Avenue, and hotels, restaurants and hospital buildings are all connected via a growing network of underground pedestrian subways and skyway bridges. It only takes about 5 minutes to drive to Med City’s international airport, 2 miles south. “There’re usually two major airlines that will have commuter flights out of Rochester, and you also have a little bit of Mayo medical transit,” says Ugland. U.S. Highway 52 offers a straight shot to the Twin Cities 90 miles away.
