A 1970s-era neighborhood on the outskirts of a growing city
Five decades ago, Rochester, Minnesota's population was less than half the size it is today. Back then, split-level houses and condo units in Northeast neighborhoods like Valhalla were still brand new, and Grandma's Kitchen off North Broadway was just beginning to perfect its famous hot sandwiches. Even in the 1970s, the Mayo Clinic was the city's leading employer. Just as many do today, Valhalla residents commuted the 2 miles south to work as doctors, nurses and support staff at the hospital. Along with providing employment opportunities for over 40,000 people throughout the metropolitan area, Mayo sponsors outdoor concert series, artisan markets like Thursdays Downtown and wintertime festivities like Social-ICE in Peace Plaza. Especially with the emergence of multi-billion-dollar projects like Destination Medical Center, Mayo's importance is keenly felt Downtown, in Valhalla and beyond.

Single-family homes from the 1970s and Valhalla Condominiums
"It's a fairly established neighborhood," says Jennifer Mitchell of Edina Realty, referring to Valhalla, adding, "Most of that area was developed in the mid-1970s, and housing is kind of different than what we see now. It was open to a wide variety of builders and different styles of homes: tuck-unders, ranches…" Two-car garages are common, and lot sizes average over a quarter acre, which means enough room for flower gardens and the occasional backyard trampoline. Prices for single-family homes hover between $300,000 and $450,000, whereas units in Valhalla Condominiums, built in 1977, start around $130,000.

Rochester's highest point of elevation, hiking trails and hockey
Indian Heights Park spans nearly 40 acres and marks Rochester's highest point of elevation. The city declared the park, once a burial ground for the Dakota People, a protected wildlife area in the 1970s. It continues to attract hikers looking for Zumbro River and forest views. The historic Wilson House, which hosts regular Mayo Clinic events, is also onsite, and Viking Park has a lighted hockey rink, a playground and baseball fields. Mitchell also points to the Rochester Recreation Center, which has a lap pool and indoor ice rink that residents can rent out for birthday parties.

Summer baseball, Social-ICE and Thursdays Downtown
Beginning around Memorial Day, the Rochester Honkers—Med City's summer league baseball team—draw families, coworkers and patients in town for medical treatments to the Mayo Field bleachers. "Players come from all over the country and even outside the country," says Clint Narramore, the team's general manager, adding the concession stands sell hot dogs, burgers, brats and chicken sandwiches: "Classic baseball food." According to Mitchell, Rochester also hosts an event called Social-ICE during the height of winter. "There's a plaza near many of the Mayo Buildings and downtown shops. They take that plaza area, and it becomes a gathering place with lots of ice sculptures," she says, adding, "Local pubs and restaurants have cocktails, and there's live music." Other popular activities include Thursdays Downtown—formerly Thursdays on First—where local craftsmen and food vendors sell their wares: skincare, handmade jewelry, fresh shawarma and more. In Mitchell's words, Rochester's busy events calendar is a "Natural progression for a growing city."

Hummus plates, homemade pies and grocery options
Valhalla is almost entirely residential, notes Mitchell, but restaurants like Middle East on Elton Hills Drive are a few blocks outside the neighborhood. Dishes include hummus and lamb plates, samosas and chicken kabobs, and locals can order takeout or park to eat inside. Grandma's Kitchen, which opens daily at 6 a.m. for breakfast, is just across the river next to Silver Lake Foods. It's attracted a steady stream of regulars with its homemade pies, hashbrowns and turkey sandwiches since 1977. Along with Silver Lake Foods, Mitchell says other grocery options include Hy-Vee; there's one on 37th to the north and one in Barlow Plaza to the south. Both are less than 2 miles from the neighborhood.

Commuters looking to avoid parking in Downtown Rochester can make use of the city's public transit system. Buses stop every 60 minutes near Valhalla Condominiums and travel south down 3rd Avenue towards the Mayo Clinic's Methodist Campus. For others, heading to work in the morning can mean biking alongside the Zumbro River. The city has a paved trail system that covers a total of 80 miles, connecting various parks, golf courses and shopping centers. Rochester International Airport is about 12 miles—just over 15 minutes—from Valhalla along Highway 52, a route that also leads north towards the Twin Cities.
