Restaurant patios border suburban streets in Northeast Rochester
In the summer, when temperatures hover between the mid-70s and 80s, residents of Northeast Rochester bring towels and beach chairs to Foster Arend Park. Here, kids can enjoy the lakeside beach, or swim out to the inflatable water park just offshore. While others might opt to nab a burger from the Purple Goat's patio. It's all within biking—or even walking—distance of Viking Hills, a primarily residential Rochester neighborhood less than 4 miles from Downtown. "It's a tucked-away subdivision," says Christopher Hus, a Realtor with RE/MAX Results. "You don't have all that drive-thru traffic, and it's got more of a neighborhood feel." Homes bordering Viking Hills' namesake park are typically between 30 and 40 years old, and it's common for residents to work at the Mayo Clinic (Rochester's leading employer since its founding well over a century ago). "At least 50% of the population works at Mayo," says Andrew Atwood of Century 21, who adds that the hospital is only continuing to expand. Neighborhoods like Viking Hills reflect the diversity of the clinic; doctors, nurses, and researchers travel from around the world to pursue medical careers, often relocating and settling their families in Rochester, Minnesota.

1980s and '90s-era homes with two-car garages
Split-levels, late 20th-century ranch-style houses and New Traditionals are common in Viking Hills, where sloped, winding streets "Have Canadian names like Alberta," according to Hus. Prices typically fall between $300,000 and $450,000. Most homes have attached two-car garages, and lot sizes are generally less than a quarter-acre. There are raised back porches, and many don swing sets and flower beds. As is typical throughout residential Rochester, both sides of the street are lined with sidewalks, and in the fall, pumpkins decorate front stoops, and bags of leaves wait on the curb for pick-up.

Burgers at Purple Goat and Downtown Rochester for upscale dining
Locals—everyone from the staffers at the Boys & Girls Club of Rochester to Realtors like Hus and Atwood—recommend Purple Goat off North Broadway Avenue. The restaurant serves starters like beer-battered cheese curds and loaded nachos, with burger toppings like smoked bacon, fried onions and even pickled beets. Atwood also highlights Tavern 22 nearby, which opens early on weekends to serve breakfast. The Hy-Vee off 37th Street is a favorite for groceries, but there's also a Silver Lake Foods down Broadway Avenue. Downtown Rochester is the go-to destination for more upscale dining, and restaurants like ThaiPop and Crave are particular favorites. Re/Max Results Realtor Dane White also points to the many underground shopping options, part of Rochester's pedestrian subway network. "You can buy granite. You can buy countertops, fine arts…There are all sorts of chocolate stores and spas," he says. In Rochester, Atwood says, "Business is thriving."

Skateboarding lessons, paved trails and public beaches
The small playground at Viking Hills Park is bordered by residential homes and The Garden Skate Park, where locals can book hour-long learn-to-skate lessons or energize with a cup of coffee at the attached cafe. The skate park also hosts summer camps and Family Fun Nights. Rochester is known for its expansive network of paved walking and biking trails—about 85 miles worth—and it's also connected to other parks like Emerald Hills and Foster-Arend Beach Park. At the beach, the city tests water quality weekly to determine whether it's safe for swimmers.
Riverview West Park is also a popular place for joggers.

Outdoor concerts and indoor golf simulators
In Viking Hills, summer means live music on the patio at Purple Goat, while colder days are spent using the indoor golf simulator at Chip Shots, where some locals also join pickleball and cornhole leagues. Nearby, blockbuster movies screen at the CMX Chateau. A few miles south in Downtown Rochester, the Mayo Clinic sponsors live music performances in Peace Plaza and year-round festivals. On Thursdays in June, July and August, for instance, vendors set up booths near the clinic's Methodist Campus, selling everything from handmade jewelry to gourmet popcorn. It's part of an all-day event called Thursdays Downtown, formerly known as Thursdays on First. Bands perform on Sunday nights in Mayo Park, which is sandwiched between Silver Lake and the Mayo Civic Center.

Mayo Clinic commutes via Broadway Avenue
Downtown Rochester is less than 4 miles, or around 10 minutes, from Viking Hills along Broadway Avenue. Residents commuting to work at the Mayo Clinic will typically use their own cars, but Rochester public buses also stop near the Purple Goat. Center city buildings are connected by subways—underground pedestrian tunnels—and skyways. "There're always volunteers who work at the hospital with blue jackets on who direct people in the right direction," says Hus, adding that the tunnel system was built with Rochester's cold winters and patient accessibility in mind. He also highlights an "unprecedented" $5 billion project called Destination Medical Center, which is slated to improve city infrastructure in coming years. Rochester International Airport is about 14 miles south along U.S. Highway 52, and the Twin Cities are less than 90 miles north, also via Highway 52.
