A tranquil place to live
Lilacs bloom a mile south of Downtown Rochester In Highland Park, a community near some of the city’s most significant landmarks, such as Mount Hope Cemetery and Warner Castle, as well as Highland Hospital. While the neighborhood is just a walk away from downtown, it looks like it could be on the edge, with low noise pollution and a colossal population of trees great for families with work in the city. “Even though the lots are small, there’s a lot of greenery,” says Gabrielle Marino, a real estate agent with Revolution Real Estate. “Highland Park is in the city, but because of all the trees you have a more suburban feel.”
Modest homes
“There’s a lot of older architecture. Colonials are the most prevalent style in the neighborhood,” Marino says. “Some of them are still operating as single-family homes and others have been converted to multi-family homes, but they’ve retained their character.” Shotgun, foursquare and bungalow houses are less common but can still be found with wood and brick faces on the neighborhood’s gridded blocks. Smaller, older homes with some level of disrepair sell for prices ranging from $30,000 to $100,000. Larger, more pristine houses sell from $100,000 to $500,000. Lots are thin, with front yards no longer than a dozen feet long and backyards big enough to fit a second house. House hunters easily find properties with one-car garages and big trees shading the backs of multiple homes at once.
Little Free Libraries can be found outside many homes in Highland Park.
