Located in northwest Rochester and covering a 178-acre span, Maplewood Historic District is defined by tree-lined streets and historic architecture. Founded in the late 1700s the area has undergone numerous iterations from its origins as a port town to its status now as a thriving community. Its eastern border is shaped by the Genesee River and evenly bisected by Route 104. Holy Sepulcher Cemetery marks its northern half, and the multi-lane Mount Read Boulevard carves out its western limit. Located in the neighborhood where Kodak film company rose to fame before becoming a thing of the technological past, Maplewood is close to everywhere, 20 minutes from the airport, about from the same from the city, close to restaurants, shopping and the interstate. “We’re close to downtown, but we’re also close to the burbs, so it’s sort of like the best of both worlds,” says Bill Gibson, a therapist who has Rochester home for 17 years, all of them spent here in Maplewood. “It’s sort of like a little bit of an oasis. It’s a nice neighborhood. Very mixed neighborhood. Pretty stable.”
Or at least it has been stable. These days, Maplewood is going through a bit of transition. “We notice more houses for sale in the neighborhood. I don’t think it means anything other than sort of the natural turnover,” Gibson says noting how families that have spent decades here are moving into the next phase of life. “As people get older, they are starting to move to Florida, or some sort of assisted living, or they’re downsizing houses.”
Maplewood has a very well-established neighborhood association that manages and advocates for the maintenance of the community. By encouraging its residents to take part in decision-making that will impact the community, it fosters a sense of ownership and investment that keeps it thriving. “They have a Facebook page. There is a sense of community,” Gibson says.
Meanwhile, Sacred Heart Cathedral stands as a hallmark of spiritual guidance that has been in the community for over 70 years. Built in 1927, the church’s Neo-Gothic style has become a landmark. Similarly supported by the Diocese of Rochester is the Holy Sepulcher Cemetery which is well known for its beautiful gardens and peaceful environment.

In terms of shopping, it is a mix. There are several grocery stores in and close to the community, the largest being Wegmans. Down the road, The Mall at Greece Ridge is where a lot of shoppers find themselves when seeking out popular retail stores. Throughout the community, there’s a wealth of mom-and-pop stores, chain restaurants and bars. “We just discovered this wonderful place called Shawarma. It’s actually right outside the neighborhood but it’s close to us. It’s a Middle Eastern place that has wonderful food,” Gibson says.
