Why Strong appeals to medical staff, students and nearby workers

Three miles south of Downtown Rochester, Strong is a busy, walkable community offering a mix of apartment buildings and historic homes near the University of Rochester and Strong Memorial Hospital. Often nicknamed “White Coat Village,” the neighborhood is especially popular with medical staff and students. Mount Hope Avenue serves as the main commercial corridor, with restaurants, shops and nightlife, anchored by the College Town development. Residents also benefit from public transit access and proximity to green spaces, including Highland Park and the Genesee Riverway Trail.

Homes range from historic styles to updated multifamily options

Homes in Strong were built between the late 19th and late 20th centuries. “The single-family residential/rental is a good business model there,” says Ignazio Vaccaro, a real estate professional with Keller Williams Realty Greater Rochester West and a Rochester local. “You’ll find a lot of students, as well as residents at the hospital.”

Leafy side streets feel noticeably quieter than the neighborhood’s busier corridors. American Foursquare and Colonial Revival homes are common, some converted to multifamily properties, with details like louvered shutters, porticos and clapboard siding in neutral tones or pastels. Craftsman bungalows and ranch-style homes — typically smaller — round out the mix. Many properties retain their early- to mid-20th-century character, but some have been updated with features such as attached garages and decks.

Prices range from the lower $100,000s for a modest single-family home to the lower $500,000s for an updated multifamily property. The median sale price is in the upper $200,000s — above the citywide median but lower than neighboring Brighton. “Homes sell quickly here because it’s a desirable place with the suburbs close to the non-residential areas,” says John Buscemi, a Realtor at Howard Hanna with over 15 years of experience. Most residents rent, and there are apartment communities, such as Mount Hope Lofts and the 55-plus Brickstone.
