Suburban prewar homes and apartment options in Strong
Home values run from $225,000 to $400,000, varying by square footage and lot size. Strong’s single-family homes consist of center-hall colonials, ramblers, Cape Cod and Craftsman homes, mostly built during the 1930s and ‘40s after Strong Memorial Hospital became an established medical center in the city. There are 1,000- to 1,500-square-foot Cape Cods and ranch houses in the $150,000 to $225,000 price range. Larger Chalet-style bungalows, colonials and Foursquare homes stretch up to 2,500 square feet in size and are priced in the $250,000 to $350,000 range. Single-family homes have attached garages, driveways and about a quarter-acre of grass in the front and back yards. Sidewalks line the streets throughout the residential sections and into the busier retail spaces, making the neighborhood walkable. “Homes sell quickly here because it’s a desirable place with the suburbs close to the non-residential areas,” Buscemi says. Most Strong residents are renters, as several apartment complexes are dotted throughout the area, making it a popular destination for college students. At Elmwood Manor, there are apartment and townhouse options, and Brickstone offers apartments to retirement-aged residents.Close to Highland Park and with trails by the Erie Canal
A block north of Strong is Highland Park, an arboretum laid out by Frederick Law Olmstead, an influential landscape architect and designer of urban parks in the late 1800s. Locals can get fresh air here and enjoy the views of dwarf evergreens in the rock garden, gaze upon Japanese maple trees, and see the oval-shaped pansy bed that blooms into new patterns every year. Highland Park also features a pond, conservatory, and an outdoor stage that hosts performance art pieces and live music. Highland Park hosts the Rochester Lilac Festival in May. Locals can witness the bloom of many pink lilacs while enjoying live music and food vendors. The park also hosts the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, honoring the fallen soldiers from the greater Rochester area. To the east of Strong, locals can stroll the paved path beside the 12-acre pond at Brighton Town Park, spotting turtles, geese and deer along the way. A small walking path off Westmoreland Drive leads to the Erie Canal Heritage Trail, the local segment of the larger Empire State Trail. Locals here can walk or bike ride with views overlooking the Erie Canal. Mount Hope Cemetery is also within the neighborhood and is the burial place of Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass.Locals dine along Mount Hope Avenue
College Town Rochester features fast-casual spots like Chipotle and Insomnia Cookies and the University of Rochester’s campus Barnes & Noble, all along Mount Hope Avenue. Local restaurant Mamasan’s Noodle Caboodle Restaurant offers Vietnamese and Thai noodle dishes. For breakfast, the Mount Hope Diner serves everything from eggs and waffles to Rochester’s signature dish, the garbage plate, a platter of ground meat and home fries topped with hot sauce or chili. The southwest corner of Strong has a Costco for groceries, but if residents aren’t members, they may have to go a mile north to South Wedge for local options like Highland Market or Abundance Food Co-op.Nearby Rochester City Public Schools

Kids can then progress to the nearby Anna Murray-Douglass Academy, a magnet school teaching kindergarten through eighth grade, with a playground and student-run garden. Both schools get a C-minus grade from Niche. Finally, James Monroe High is in neighboring South Wedge and has a C-rating.Strong Memorial Hospital and University of Rochester are a walk away
