Hills and grassy lawns twelve miles from downtown St. Louis

One of the many self-governing cities in St. Louis County, Rock Hill has a fitting name. Narrow roads are sometimes bordered by retaining walls, allowing most homes to have level driveways and tuck-under garages even as cars make their way up and down hills. Mature trees line the front yards, and homes generally sit close together, sharing leaves and snow on grassy yards. Rock Hill is only eleven miles from downtown St. Louis, but still retains its smaller feel. “We’re a small municipality between several larger ones,” says Garrett Schlett, City Administrator for Rock Hill since October 2023. “Lately there’s been a good mix of families who have moved in and families who have been here forever. Our mayor actually grew up here and has stayed in the area.”

Older homes with and without renovations

Homes in Rock Hill tend to be older, built in the 1940s, 50s and 60s, but there is some newer construction as well. “There’s a good mixture of housing,” says Schlett. “We have some old homes that have been well-taken care of and some super old ones that have been torn down and rebuilt.” Bungalows and ranch homes are the most common types and with a median price of $290,000, prices can have a large range. Ranch homes with two bedrooms can sell for $200,000 and reach $430,000 for three bedrooms. Bungalows can begin around $130,000 with two bedrooms and no renovations and reach $440,000 with three bedrooms and renovations. New traditional homes can start around $330,000 and reach almost $800,000.

For shopping, St. Louis-based grocery store Dierbergs is located in the Warson Woods Center just outside Rock Hill city limits while ALDI is on Manchester Road next to restaurants such as Katie’s Pizza and Pasta, an Italian-based pizzeria, and MoMo Coffee Champagne Kitchen which serves breakfast and brunch from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. seven days a week. Residents can also enjoy Hacienda, a traditional Mexican restaurant on Manchester. Hacienda also has a food truck that sells a taco meal kit and margaritas.

Long-running Fall Festival and nearby baseball

Rock Hill’s Fall Festival began in 1983 and has continued every year except during 2020 due to COVID-19. Instead of the normal Fall Festival, Rock Hill hosted a drive-in move night. “There is always music, it’s always the first Saturday in October and there are always some sort of attractions or activities for the kids,” Schlett says. For sport fans, Busch Stadium, home to the Cardinal’s baseball team, is a little over twelve miles away.

One bus route and main street reaching into St. Louis

Route 57 for the MetroBus line heads east and west along Manchester Road. Heading east, route 57 concludes at the Maplewood Manchester Transit Center, where residents can use the MetroLink Blue Line to reach downtown St. Louis. “Manchester Road reaches into St. Louis itself so we see a lot of through traffic,” says Schlett. “But it rarely gets backed up, it’s constantly moving.”
