On the border between Rockford and Loves Park
Rockford was called the “Forest City” by early settlers because of the river valley’s dense woodlands. While the community has since swapped its honorary title to “the City of Gardens,” echoes of its past natural landscape can be found in areas like Forest Hills—a quiet northeast suburb virtually on the border between Rockford and Loves Park, its neighboring city. Towering maples and oaks occupy back lots and create tight lanes on the Forest Hills Country Club golf course. The neighborhood is far from being an isolated greenwood, though. Heading southwest on Forest Hills Road, residents pass locally owned eateries and nationally recognized parks near downtown Rockford, while traveling in the opposite direction takes them to big-box shopping options.

Hitting the links at Forest Hills Country Club
Established in 1921, Forest Hills Country Club has stood the test of time as a golf course and a gathering space for surrounding communities. Tennis courts and a horseshoe-shaped private pool with a 3-meter diving board are also included in the package when members sign on. Sticking to its name, the club is a member of the National Audubon Society for Golf Courses, and opts to utilize the forested terrain for an added challenge rather than leveling it. Meanwhile, Gambino Park’s soccer fields and open grassy areas are a quick walk away for homeowners on the east side of the community. And Rockford’s renowned park system is within reach, as well—starting 3 miles away at 12-acre Anderson Japanese Gardens. “Anderson Gardens one of the top Japanese Gardens in America,” says Ann Marie Walker, Director of Marketing & Communications at the Discovery Center Museum downtown. “They host a “music in the gardens” event that people can come and enjoy.”

Two-way thoroughfares and quiet offshoots in Forest Hills
As the neighborhood name suggests, most lots in Forest Hills back up to clusters of trees, though a lack of shade in the front means walks through the neighborhood will be sunny. Sidewalks connect the symmetrical split-levels and ranch-style homes along two-way roads like Pleasant Valley Boulevard, while homes on side streets and in cul-de-sacs sit closer to the road without sidewalks. Traditional-style homes in the Forest Hills subdivision sit along Pepper Drive. There’s limited street parking here, since most homes include 2-car garages and concrete driveway space. Unlike other neighborhoods in the city proper, Forest Hills is strictly residential—save for Grace Family Church and Carlson Elementary School. Some homes within eyeshot of these institutions, and most run the gamut from $150,000 to $240,000.

Loves Park grocers, Rockford eateries
Residents know they’ve reached Loves Park when they see big-box shopping areas. Forest Hill is especially close to the intersection of Riverside Road and Alpine Boulevard, where shoppers choose from ALDI, Walmart Supercenter and chain fare like McDonalds and Applebee's. By heading down North Second Street, folks reach local options in Rockford’s food scene. The Hope and Anchor English Pub places customers in the British countryside with classics like fish and chips and cottage pie. On hot summer days, folks park on the street and snag a spot in line at Dairy Depot for the promise of a towering soft-serve cone. La Casa Boricua, a Puerto Rican establishment, serves empanadas and tripleta sandwiches strictly to-go.
