Suburban city with a small-town feel

Twenty-six miles from downtown Detroit, the city of Rockwood occupies less than 3 square miles between the Huron and Detroit Rivers. Rockwood was established in the late 1700s and is part of the nineteen-community Downriver area. Its position on the waterfront made it a shipping center, although the area’s growth was slow until the railroads arrived in the 1850s. Just after World War II, the region experienced another boom in housing and business, becoming a city in 1964. Many of the oldest homes and businesses were demolished in the construction of Interstate 75 in the early 60s, so housing developments became prevalent. Today, the community retains a small-town feel, with less than 3,500 people residing there. “Rockwood is a small, quiet town, and that’s just what people like about it. It just is. We’re right off the freeway and easily accessible,” says Rockwood Deputy Clerk Lillian Mathis. “There are several businesses here that facilitate kayaking along the river. You see people walking around and hanging out in our parks.”

New construction and WWII-era homes

There’s quite a variety of single-family housing in Rockwood. Colonial Revivals, Craftsman bungalows and Victorians mingle with new traditional developments and lots available for sale. There are some French Country and ranch-style homes, too. Houses are set back from the tree-lined streets on nicely sized lots with large lawns. Prices range from $120,000 for a three-bedroom Craftsman bungalow to $535,000 for a four-bedroom contemporary new construction. “Being only around 25 miles away from downtown Detroit, commuters can get wherever they need in around a half hour,” says Michelle M. Davis, Realtor with RE/MAX Masters and a resident of nearby Flat Rock. “The easy access to I-75 is a big draw. You don’t often get such great transportation in a place with the country feel of Rockwood.”

Waterfront views and community centers

Green spaces are dotted throughout Rockwood, and one of the biggest is Deland G. Mercure Memorial Park. The space contains two baseball fields, a playground and a volleyball court. There are also courts for tennis and basketball, and the Rockwood Community Center provides a space for city events and regular exercise classes. The Lake Erie Metropark occupies three miles of the lake’s shoreline while sprawling across over 1,600 acres of meadows, marshes and lagoons. The expansive area contains a sizeable municipal golf course, a marina with boat launches, a wave pool and the Marshlands Museum and Nature Center. “The wave pool at Lake Erie Metropark is a very popular local attraction,” Davis says. The museum holds educational workshops on local plants and wildlife, and is home to a bald eagle named Luc. The park is an official Michigan Wildlife Viewing Area and offers incredible panoramic views of the lake from its boardwalks.

Pizzas, gyros and kayaks

Being such a small town, Rockwood doesn’t have an extensive selection of shopping and dining choices. Luckily, the city is near Ann Arbor and Detroit's cultural districts for when residents want to venture outside the usual. Meanwhile, locals have grocery options at Rockwood Market Place or Save a Lot. There’s also a Kroger located just up I-75. Back in town, River Village Family Restaurant and Benito’s Pizza can take care of hungry stomachs. River Village Family Restaurant opened in 1993 and rests beside the Huron River. It serves American and Greek food and has daily breakfast, lunch and dinner specials. River Village also provides kayak rentals, so guests can have a meal before or after floating down the river. Benito’s Pizza creates old-world flavors with high-quality ingredients. Founded in 1979, the family-owned regional chain has calzones, pasta, salads and more.

Interstates, airports and sidewalks

There are plenty of ways to get around in Rockwood, namely I-75, which bisects the city. Major local roads include West Jefferson Avenue and Huron River Drive. The city runs a senior van service for the elderly, disabled and low-resource individuals in the Downriver region. Well-kept sidewalks are found in almost all of the residential areas. The city is 18 miles from the Detroit Metropolitan Airport and 9 miles from the Grosse Ile Municipal Airport, an airfield for private and corporate aircraft. There’s also an urgent care clinic 3 miles away in Brownstown Township.
