Convenient suburban living in Rockwood

Rockwood is a Chesterfield County community centered around a park with the same name. “If you want to meet friendly people – be out there and find local fun – Rockwood Park makes that happen,” says Realtor Antwane Brooks with Praxis Realty, who grew up in the neighborhood. Hull Street Road, a major thoroughfare in the Richmond area, cuts through the middle of the community. It’s lined with commercial conveniences and leads to state Route 288, making daily errands and the 15-mile commute to downtown Richmond easy. Plus, there’s a range of housing in Rockwood, and locals like the variety this provides. “The price range is so diverse, so the population is diverse,” Brooks says. “If diversity is important to you, this is a great place to be.”

Older homes, new construction and townhouses separated from main roads

Homes in Rockwood sit away from main thoroughfares, on roadways lined with mature oak and pine trees. Dog walkers stroll sidewalks, landscaped greenery dots large front yards and homes are set back from the road. Most properties were built between the 1970s and the 2010s, and the housing reflects common styles from this era – Colonial Revivals, bi-levels and ranch-style homes. Recent growth has brought contemporary townhouses, subdivisions of new builds and a retirement community to Rockwood. “You can find things in a variety of price ranges, depending on where you look,” Brooks says. “There are townhouses, single-family homes, something for everyone.” Potential homebuyers can find an older single-story property needing some updates for between $250,000 and $320,000, while four-bedroom, two-story houses typically cost about $400,000 to $650,000. Recently built single-family homes run in the $600,000 to $775,000 range, while newer townhouses can cost about $300,000 to $590,000.

Weekends at Rockwood Park and other nearby outdoor spaces

The over 170-acre Rockwood Park is Chesterfield County’s oldest, and Brooks says that it's a prominent community gathering space. “There are a lot of Little League baseball teams that play over there and a plethora of people playing pickup basketball on Saturday or Sunday,” he says. “Everyone takes their kids to the playground or will be out walking their dogs on the weekends.” Alongside the park’s wooded trails and dog park, the Rockwood Nature Center educates kids about the natural world from its log-cabin-style building. It also offers archery lessons and seasonal nature programs, like guided hikes. Nearby, the River City Sportsplex has 12 synthetic turf fields that regularly host regional and national soccer, field hockey and lacrosse tournaments. Providence Golf Club, where the 18-hole course is dotted by ponds and wetlands, is about 5 miles away. Rockwood is also near the almost 8,000-acre Pocahontas State Park, which has 90 miles of trails to explore.

Shopping, dining and entertainment along Hull Street Road

The neighborhood’s main thoroughfare is Hull Street Road, with many shopping and dining options. Genito Crossing shopping center sits roughly in the middle of Rockwood. It has a Food Lion grocery store; restaurants like El Guapo, a Mexican spot, and Skrimp Shack, a seafood eatery; and various other businesses. Across the street, the Victorian Square strip mall has big-box retailers like Ashley Store and Gabe’s; a Market Bazaar antique shop; and various restaurants, like Yewon, which serves Korean cuisine, and Juice Bar Café, a healthier option. Traveling west on Hull Street Road leads to even more shopping, dining and entertainment, from Walmart Supercenter and the Home Depot in the Chesterfield Crossing shopping center to the Fresh Market and Target at Commonwealth Center. There’s also a Regal Commonwealth movie theatre, the Uptown Alley bowling center and Shooters Indoor Sportsplex roller skating rink along Commonwealth Centre Parkway, just off Hull Street Road.
