Rural living in Rocky Ford
Rocky Ford, famous for its cantaloupes and watermelons, and known as the Sweet Melon Capital, is a small community of about 4,000 in central Colorado’s Arkansas Valley. Surrounded by vast stretches of farmland, the city has been an agricultural community since the 1800s. Today, rooted in its farming traditions, the area continues to have agricultural and livestock fairs, and local farms have produce markets in the summer. “Rocky Ford is very laid-back, relaxed and outdoorsy,” says Tina Godfrey, a Realtor at Re/Max Advantage - The Murphy Group with over 25 years of experience. “There’s a big focus on agriculture and sports. A lot of the land here is private farmland, so you have to find state reservation land or wildlife preserves to do things outdoors.”
Rocky Ford’s economy is heavily supported by farming, with crops like melons, chilies, and corn thriving in the warm climate and rich soil.
While small in size, Rocky Ford plays a big role in Colorado’s agricultural output and continues to embody the heart of rural America.
