Rodman offers quiet, country living near Watertown
Rodman is a quiet community in Jefferson County, located about 10 miles south of Watertown and 20 miles south of Fort Drum, a U.S. Army installation. The area is also surrounded by nature trails, state forests and scenic waterways, making it easy for locals to enjoy year-round outdoor recreation. Wide-open country landscapes and winding roads give the community its rural character, appealing to those who seek space and tranquility. “We have more cows than people,” says Jamie Ackley, town clerk. “We are very small and quiet with lots of countryside. There are no major cities around, and you have to drive 20 minutes to get to a Walmart.”
Properties range from historical builds to newer ranch-style houses
Rodman’s homes are nestled in open fields, wooded parcels and rolling hills. Properties in the village sit closer together along quiet, tree-lined streets, while those out in the countryside are spaced apart. Many houses have large land parcels ranging from 5 to 15 acres, and many feature detached garages, storage sheds, gardens and expansive green space. Houses span from the mid-1800s to contemporary builds from the 21st century, and housing styles include cottages, farmhouses, colonial-inspired homes and ranch-style properties. Single-family houses typically fall between $300,000 and $400,000, while mobile and manufactured homes can go between $60,000 and $250,000. Most properties rely on private septic systems and well water.
Forest trails and waterways offer year-round outdoor fun
The town is surrounded by waterways, nature trails and forested areas. “This is a big hunting area,” Ackley says, noting that many residents take advantage of nearby state lands for seasonal game. Sandy Creek winds through the area, serving as a popular fishing and boating spot. On the eastern side of town, the Douglas L. Murray Trail and the Glasier Trail both offer hiking and skiing. Farther east, the expansive Tug Hill State Forest opens up opportunities for birdwatching, seasonal wildflower viewing and brook trout fishing. Within the forest, the John Young Nature Trail leads to views of Inman Gulf, while the Inman Glide Trails guide hikers to Rainbow Falls. During winter, the forest transforms into a haven for winter sports, allowing snowmobiling, dogsledding and snowshoeing along the 13-mile Barnes Corners Cross-country Ski Trails system.
