Affordable rural homes close to mountain parks in Rohrersville
Rohrersville is a secluded rural enclave in Washington County, where the Blue Ridge Mountains cover the horizon. Locals often shop in neighboring towns and support small farm stands closer to the community, or commute to Hagerstown, which is a half hour north. "I would say that it's a very quiet, quaint, tight-knit community; it has a wonderful winery, the schools are rated highly, and you can get a lot more home for your money compared to other parts of Washington County or Frederick County," says Stacy Allwein, a Realtor and team leader of the Allwein Team with Real Broker, LLC – Frederick with 17 years of experience serving the Delmarva region. "It's commutable to Frederick, Washington and Baltimore, though the drive is a little longer, it's still an option." Residents can easily access several wildlife preserves, parks, and hiking areas within minutes or reach access points to the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, a renowned East Coast landmark.
Appalachian Trail access at White Rocks Overlook and Gathland Park
White Rocks Trail Overlook is a scenic mountain hiking area located east of the community. The wooded mountain path connects to the famous Appalachian Trail, which spans over 2,000 miles from Maine to Georgia. The community park has soccer fields, picnic pavilions and a playground, and is sponsored by the Rohrersville Ruritan Club, a service organization. Mount Briar Wetlands Preserve is farther north and spans 30 acres. Visitors often come to birdwatch along the mile-long floating boardwalk that cuts through marshes and dense woodlands. Gathland State Park also offers access to the Appalachian Trail and features a monument dedicated to Civil War correspondents. Visitors can also tour several landmark buildings constructed by George Alfred Townsend, a 19th-century journalist who once resided on the mountain within the park.
Rustic single-family homes with acreage and farmettes
Rohrersville features rustic ramblers, Colonial Revivals and Craftsman-style homes along winding country roads lined with picket fences and lush farmland. Single-family homes are priced from $400,000 to $800,000 and vary in price according to square footage and lot size. Allwein says that many buyers she comes across move to the area for the multi-acre properties, where they can hobby farm and own chickens. "In downtown Rohrersville, I sell older homes and renovated farmhouses, sometimes to young families. There's a great community there with a rural atmosphere," says Allwein. "People who want to wake up and get their eggs fresh in the morning."
Students at Boonsboro High can earn college credits
Washington County Public Schools is the district serving Rohrersville. Students can attend Pleasant Valley Elementary School, which has a B-plus rating from Niche. Boonsboro Middle School gets an A-minus and Boonsboro High gets a B-plus. The high school offers Advanced Placement courses as well as the Early College Program, which enables students to take Hagerstown Community College classes to earn credits toward an associate's degree before graduation.
Local wines at Big Cork Vineyard, and nearby farm markets
Big Cork Vineyards is in the south end of Rohrersville, offering a wine club subscription as well as tastings and live music events on its scenic farm patio. The neighboring town of Boonsboro has a Weis Markets for groceries, as well as local farm stands, such as Cronise Market Place, offering locally sourced produce. Hagerstown is a half-hour drive north and features retail centers such as Valley Mall and Hagerstown Premium Outlets.
Hagerstown and Frederick are less than an hour away
Due to the lack of public transit options, Rohrersville residents are reliant on personal cars for travel. Hagerstown is a 17-mile drive north on Rohrersville Road for work, leisure or a flight out of Hagerstown Regional Airport. The nearest hospital is Meritus Health, 15 miles north of the community. Frederick is a 26-mile drive east and is home to Fort Detrick, a military installation with over 7,000 employees in military, civilian and contractor roles.
