Million-dollar homes close to horse trails

Most homes are detached single-family properties that have large lots and midcentury modern designs. They usually sell between $1 million and $5.5 million, and some are in HOA-managed areas that charge monthly fees. There are also townhouses and condos, and the prices can range from the lower $400,000s to around $1.6 million. “In certain communities, many people keep horses on their property,” says Realtor Terri Harkins with Vista Sotheby’s International Realty, who has been selling here for over 30 years. “There are horse trails that intertwine between properties and throughout the city.”

What outdoor spaces and parks are in Rolling Hills Estates

The city is unique because of its layout. “Rolling Hills Estates is more spacious and rural than the rest of the peninsula,” Harkin says. “Instead of looking more suburban, it has these spacious wooded lots and big open canyons that make it much quieter.” You can drive about 5 miles to Torrance Beach for a day out, but you can also stay closer to home and visit:

  • Linden H. Chandler Preserve — a nearly 30-acre expanse of open space, with dirt trails used by hikers and horseback riders
  • Ernie Howlett Park— home to the Rolling Hills Estates Tennis Club and multiple athletic courts
  • South Coast Botanic Garden — a former landfill that now features more than 2,000 plant species in curated gardens
  • Rolling Hills Country Club — a private 18-hole course where members can also use the in-ground pool, spa and tennis courts

  • The City Celebration each September, featuring horse competitions, pony rides and kids’ games
  • The Hills Are Alive 10K/5K, a community run/walk along the city’s horse trails every May
