Mid-century homes with character and spacious suburban lots

South San Gabriel is located at the southern corner of the valley, just north of Whittier and Montebello and about 10 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The neighborhood features a sea of single-family, suburban homes that were built in the 1960s and 70s. There’s a wide mix of mid-century styles on display here, including cozy cottages and breezy Mission Revival style homes. You’ll also find a wealth of ranch style homes with plenty of interesting quirks and details, whether it's an uncharacteristically wide front porch, exposed exterior beams, wood paneled siding or a half-timbered portico that catches your eye. Some of the homes in the neighborhood have large, sprawling lots so you’ll have plenty of privacy. Prices typically range from around $600,000 to more than $1 million depending on the square footage and lot size.

Parks offer sports fields, playgrounds and shaded picnic areas

South San Gabriel residents will have plenty of parks to enjoy close to home. Make sure you swing by Potrero Heights Park, which shares a parcel with Potrero Heights Elementary School. Students attend schools in Montebello and Garvey districts

South San Gabriel is served by the Montebello Unified School District and the Garvey School District. Within the neighborhood, young students can attend Potrero Heights Elementary School, a standout public school that was recently recognized as a California Distinguished School, a prestigious award for schools that demonstrate academic excellence. Students can also attend nearby Macy Intermediate School, a public middle school, and Schurr High School. For an alternative, you might consider Don Bosco Technical Institute, a private, all-boys Catholic School that offers a plethora of technology courses in addition to its standard curriculum, including architecture, computer science, media arts, electrical engineering and environmental technology.
