South San Gabriel is a suburban community with an excellent elementary school and easy access to local freeways. It’s located within the San Gabriel Valley, a vast, urbanized area that lies immediately east of the city of Los Angeles and takes up much of southeastern Los Angeles County. It’s known as one of the most diverse areas in the United States.
South San Gabriel is located at the southern corner of the valley, just north of Whittier and Montebello and about 10 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The neighborhood features a sea of single-family, suburban homes that were built in the 1960s and 70s. There’s a wide mix of mid-century styles on display here, including cozy cottages and breezy Mission Revival style homes. You’ll also find a wealth of ranch style homes with plenty of interesting quirks and details, whether it's an uncharacteristically wide front porch, exposed exterior beams, wood paneled siding or a half-timbered portico that catches your eye. South San Gabriel residents will have plenty of parks to enjoy close to home. Make sure you swing by Potrero Heights Park, which shares a parcel with Potrero Heights Elementary School. This lovely open space has athletic fields, playgrounds, picnic tables and a modern community center that hosts exercise classes and monthly movie nights. The neighborhood is also just a short drive away from the Whittier Narrows Park and Recreation Area. With baseball diamonds, soccer fields, a golf course, a dirt BMX track, walking paths and two small lakes, it’s got a little something for everyone. It could be a great place to cool off in the shade on a sizzling summer afternoon.
South San Gabriel is served by the Montebello Unified School District and the Garvey School District. Within the neighborhood, young students can attend Potrero Heights Elementary School, a standout public school that was recently recognized as a California Distinguished School, a prestigious award for schools that demonstrate academic excellence. Students can also attend nearby Macy Intermediate School, a public middle school, and Schurr High School. For an alternative, you might consider Don Bosco Technical Institute, a private, all-boys Catholic School that offers a plethora of technology courses in addition to its standard curriculum, including architecture, computer science, media arts, electrical engineering and environmental technology.
Area shopping destinations include big box stores like Walmart, Costco and Home Depot. It’s just a short trek to The Shops at Montebello, an indoor shopping mall with dozens of retail outlets and dining options like JCPenney, Macy’s, Forever 21, Panda Express, Sbarro and Charley’s Cheesesteaks. Right next door you can catch the latest Hollywood blockbuster on the silver screen at AMC Montebello 10.
With rows of single-family homes in suburban Los Angeles County, South San Gabriel could be a great location for commuters. It’s just a few minutes from Interstate 10, a major corridor that will take you straight to world-class cultural destinations in downtown Los Angeles.
