Natural feel, close to Roseville and Douglass Boulevard
About 2 miles east of Roseville, Sierra Gardens feels far away from city life. Residents can walk paths to Cirby Creek greenways and, when the day is done, come home to large lots uncharacteristic of California. Winding streets and cul-de-sacs are lined with oaks and pines, so bikers can have some shade when they peddle around the neighborhood. As an added bonus, properties are cheaper than other parts of the city, and schools are right in the middle of the neighborhood. This community, despite its natural feel, is a few paces north of Douglass Boulevard restaurants and shops; Interstate 80 is just west, making for an 18-mile commute to Sacramento.
Ranch-styles on a budget, large lots
Price is one of the primary draws in this neighborhood: compared to neighboring Cirby Side and Maidu, the median sold price in Sierra Gardens is roughly 20% lower. “It tends to be a lower-cost area because the homes are older than other parts of Roseville, but they’re well-built,” says Realtor Heather McCarthy of Better Homes & Gardens Real Estate. Ranch-styles from the 1960s make up most of the west side, while similar builds from the 1980s are toward the east. Despite their differences, they share an abundance of mature trees and wide driveways. “It’s a good place for first-time buyers,” says McCarthy, “because they’ll have nice-sized yards compared to newer properties, and the homes aren’t right next to each other.” Three-bedroom ranches are priced between $450,000 and $650,000; four-bedrooms are likely in the upper half of this range, between $550,000 and $650,000.

Maidu Regional and Sierra Gardens Parks, Folsom Lake
Maidu Regional Park is one of the biggest green spaces in Roseville, and lucky for Sierra Gardens residents, they have it on the east side of the neighborhood. Its 150 acres include four baseball diamonds, five soccer fields, a skate park and a basketball court. On the north side of the park, Maidu Community Center hosts bridge and other weekly games, and visitors to Maidu Museum & Historic Site can see petroglyphs by the Nisenan Maidu people. The closest park to most homes is Sierra Gardens Park, in the middle of the neighborhood, but it’s only open to the public on weekends and summers — Eich Middle uses its athletic field and track for youth sports. When its gates unlock, residents can see birds and other wildlife on its northernmost walking path, which follows Cirby Creek for about a half-mile. They might go south to Linda Creek and connect to Maidu Regional Park, accessible via foot trails and Rocky Ridge Drive. Folsom Lake is a 7-mile drive east, too, where they can launch boats into open water.

Douglass Boulevard: local restaurant chains, department stores
Douglass Boulevard makes up the north side of Sierra Gardens, so its restaurants and retail are less than a mile from most homes. Residents can relive the 1950s at The Original Mel’s Diner, a local chain that specializes in all-day breakfast. Squeeze Burger is a full-service American joint, but most people come here for the Squeeze with Cheese: it’s a cheeseburger with an additional “cheese skirt,” a crispy layer of shredded cheese on the bottom. Department stores are also in this district, so shoppers can explore TJMaxx, Target, Walmart and others. That grocery list can disappear at Raley’s, a West Coast chain, while Mercado Loco specializes in Mexican products. If these closer options don’t satisfy, Westfield Galleria is about 3 miles north, and this indoor mall has 200 restaurants and shops to explore.

In the summertime, crowds flock to Vernon Street for the car show, bands and vendors during Downtown Tuesday Nights. They’ll likely be back for Food Truck Mania every third Thursday, popular with vegetarians and vegans — or anyone who loves a good taco.
