Lake Owasso offers lakeside living and commuter convenience

Locals agree that the Lake Owasso neighborhood's biggest strength is its location, whether for commuting, shopping or outdoor activities. "It's got easy access to major roads, and it's within the Roseville School District," says Krista Wolter, an agent with Coldwell Banker Realty. "And it's on a recreational lake, which is a major draw." Despite this location and a collection of well-maintained midcentury homes, Lake Owasso's real estate prices are lower than much of the surrounding area. Wolter says this, and its reputation for peace and quiet, attracts retirees and families in particular. The neighborhood's CAP Index Crime Score is 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.

Snowshoeing, swimming and fishing are popular in the surrounding parks

The centerpiece of the neighborhood is the lake that shares its name. Open for recreation year-round, Lake Owasso is the largest in the Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District. In the summer, visitors can waterski, fish for carp or sunbathe on its public beaches. Many are also drawn in the winter with the promise of snowshoeing and ice fishing. The nearby Lake Josephine is best known as a popular summer swimming site. The trails at Snail Lake and Vadnais Lake cover about 8 miles of even ground with picturesque waterfront views. Central Park North offers 18 acres of undeveloped, secluded woods and wetlands. This is just one of the six parks that make up the Central Park complex, the largest in Roseville. Different park stretches feature everything from athletic fields to nature centers and arboretums.

Chain stores dominate, but local gems stand out

Most shopping occurs at the franchise stores and restaurants around the intersection of Highways 36 and 51. Groceries are available at Lunds & Byerlys at Roseville Square. "You're very close to shopping and restaurants at the Rosedale Center Mall," says Wolter, also the mayor of the nearby community of North Oaks . "The restaurants are mostly chains, but one local place that's been a huge success is Baldamar." Just off Snelling Avenue, Baldamar offers a fine dining steakhouse experience with seafood options and an extensive wine and spirits list. "It's definitely a destination restaurant," says Wolter. Showtime Studio and Coffee has more than caffeinated beverages - patrons also enjoy live performances, yoga sessions and even private music lessons.
