“The Eden of Long Island”

Over the years, many of Long Island's elite have resided in Roslyn Estates, among them famed writer Christopher Morley. The neighborhood’s proximity to charming main streets in Roslyn and Manhasset, luxury retail and ease of access to New York City make it convenient for residents, but what really draws them in is the pastoral privacy it offers. “It’s close to everything,” says Janet Berookhim, licensed associate broker at Laffey Real Estate. “And yet, when you’re in the neighborhood, you get the feeling of comfort and being out in the country. But you’re very close to stores, to everything.”

Roslyn Estates’ elegant homes

Hidden in the woods of Long Island, Roslyn Estates’ homes are the neighborhood’s main attraction. Typically around half an acre, the generous lots border winding neighborhood lanes. Many homes sit above the road in elevation, with well-manicured, landscaped lawns inviting guests in. Others lie behind dense greenery for additional privacy. On the low end of the market, contemporary split-level homes with five bedrooms start close to $1.3 million, while even larger Colonials can hit the market with asking prices as high as $4 million.

Activity at Christopher Morley Park

At the center of the tranquil neighborhood is Black Ink, a peaceful pond with benches perfect for watching the wildlife and enjoying a warm evening. But for those looking for a little more activity, Roslyn Estates backs up to Christopher Morley Park, named for the famous writer and former resident of the neighborhood. Locals can play tennis at the indoor facility, shoot hoops on the basketball courts, swim at the pool in the summer and skate at the ice rink during colder months. The park also includes a 9-hole golf course, but residents who want to play a full 18 have plenty of options.

Luxury shopping at the “Miracle Mile”

Roslyn Estates’ feeling of privacy draws in residents, but just a short walk away is the “Miracle Mile,” as locals refer to the Americana Manhasset mall. “Roslyn Estates is so centrally located that if you want to take a stroll to these shops and these restaurants, you can,” Berookhim says. Luxury retailers such as Louis Vuitton and Chanel sell their wares in the storefronts, with high-class dining offerings like Cipollini’s Italian fare. The neighborhood is also just minutes in each direction from downtown Roslyn and Manhasset, with each offering a quaint downtown with plenty of retail and restaurants.

The popular Roslyn Farmers Market

Locals of Roslyn Estates and the North Shore area often frequent the Roslyn Farmers Market at Christopher Morley Park. Held Wednesdays between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m., residents choose from such goods as fresh fruit and vegetables, cookies and homemade jams. “There are nice supermarkets out here, but it’s a different feel when you buy from a farm stand,” Berookhim says.

Easy commute into New York City

Many residents of Roslyn Estates commute into the city each day. While driving is an option — the Long Island Expressway is just a mile from the neighborhood, and the trek into Manhattan takes about an hour via car — most locals opt to take the Long Island Rail Road. The system stops at Roslyn on its Oyster Bay Branch, but the vast majority of these trains require a transfer at the Jamaica stop. Instead, residents drive the two-and-a-half miles to the Manhasset station, where they can hop on a direct train straight into the city. Roslyn Estates’ Long Island location also gives it an easy drive to either of the two major area airports, John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia.
