Rowlett community with friendly neighbors

Westwood – a community made up of several subdivisions – sits on the shores of Lake Ray Hubbard. Part of what makes the area attractive is its proximity to the water and downtown Rowlett, which is about 2 miles away. However, Hedy Sawyers, Realtor with Ebby Halliday and Westwood resident of nearly 20 years, says there is another reason she loves living in Rowlett: “It has a small-town feeling. I know the neighborhood I live in is very friendly. People know each other.” She reminisces on block parties that she and her neighbors used to attend, with games and seating supplied by the city. While the block parties stopped for a couple of years, Rowlett says the Block Party Trailer is available to rent again in 2024. Even when there were no regular block parties, neighbors still found reasons to come together for a fun afternoon, whether it was a Farmers and Crafters Market trip, or a Friday Night Grooves show.

Downtown Dallas about 20 miles away

Westwood is mostly car-dependent, with connections to major roads. Part of the President George Bush Turnpike runs along the Lake Ray Hubbard Bridge and connects with Interstate 30, which leads about 20 miles into downtown Dallas. “We really like the area because it’s so easily accessible to so many different areas,” Sawyers says. “It’s easy to get to downtown Dallas, or you could go the other way, which is Rockwall. But Rowlett, the city itself, is set back from the highway.” The Dallas Area Rapid Transit Rail Blue Line stops at Downtown Rowlett Station. Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport is about 33 miles away. One of the closest emergency rooms is at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center, about a 5-mile drive.

Getting active on the water

With Lake Ray Hubbard bordering the neighborhood, it is no surprise that residents spend a lot of time on the water. Folks can kayak, boat or go fishing. “There’s areas where everyone is relaxing and sitting on the boat,” Sawyers says. “They park their boat on the water and all just group together.” While many have their own boats, marinas such as Sapphire Bay offer rentals. The Rowlett Nature Trail runs along Rowlett Creek and offers partial lake views. It is popular for hiking and biking. Closer to downtown, families can visit Pecan Grove Park’s playground, soccer fields and community center. At the Rowlett Public Library, patrons can check out books, attend story time and join a book club.

Restaurants downtown popular among locals

Downtown Rowlett is 2 miles away, with a variety of restaurants and boutiques along Main Street. One community staple is Bankhead Brewing Co., which Sawyers says serves everything, “from pizza and burgers to steaks.” It also has over 15 original beers on tap, which customers can enjoy at the bar or take home in a growler. Across the street is Barrocos Latin Cuisine, which Sawyers says is another favorite. “It’s a small place, but it’s always packed,” she says. “Everyone loves the food; you can just tell when you walk in. It gives you that warm feeling, and everyone is having a good time.” There are also several shops downtown, including clothing boutiques such as Wisp and Willow and Girlfriends. Aldi and Sprouts Farmer Market are nearby, and shoppers can find fresh produce at the Rowlett Farmers and Crafts Market every Thursday night from April to June at Downtown Green. Target, Walmart and Home Depot are all within 3 miles of Westwood.

Rowlett events throughout the year

The city of Rowlett hosts celebrations throughout the year. Rowlett’s Family Campout is an overnight event in April where folks set up tents at Pecan Grove Park and enjoy camping staples such as s’mores and a fire. At Barks, Brews and Brats, dogs run around and make friends while their owners drink, listen to live music and explore vendors. In September, the community gathers weekly at Downtown Green for Friday Night Grooves, a free concert with food from local eateries. There are also holiday events, including a Fourth of July celebration, Halloween Festival and Christmas Parade.
