Saddle Rock/Harbor Hills
Suburban Neighborhood in Saddle Rock, New York
Nassau County 11021, 11023
Living on the dock of the bay
The waters of Little Neck Bay roll past a number of waterfront homes in Saddle Rock / Harbor Hills. “Some of the homes are waterfront or water-view,” Kanfer says. “Some are further inland, but they’re all desirable.” Sunset views are another perk of homes in the neighborhood, which vary in style. Colonial and Tudor architecture is very common, along with some ranch and Mediterranean-style houses. Brick and stucco flair can be found on the properties as well. “Homes here have appreciated significantly in the past year and a half,” Kanfer says. “Some of them have docking on the water, and there’s been new construction here too.” Homes not on the waterfront will typically range between $1.5 million to $1.9 million, while those closer to or on the shore can hit the $3 million price tag or above.Outdoor amenities on the north and south ends
Close to the northern end of the neighborhood, Saddle Rock Village Park sits on the water and has a trio of tennis courts, a basketball court alongside an open green space, exercise areas and a pool open during the summer months. Less than 10 minutes south, almost at the southernmost point of the area, is Harbor Hills Park. Though it features just two pools for all ages and a playground, it’s right alongside Village of Great Neck Estates Waterfront Park. Just across the boundary, the recreational area offers has tennis and basketball courts, a pier leading down to the water and a baseball field lined with trees past the outfield and a bay vista beyond those.A-plus-rated schools for education
At the Saddle Rock School, the only educational institution located within the neighborhood’s boundaries, students can attend kindergarten through fifth grades. Rated an A-plus by Niche, the school ranks as the 23rd-best elementary school in the entire state of New York. Great Neck North Middle School also garners an A-plus, ranking 15th in middle schools statewide. Great Neck North High School completes a clean sweep of A-plus-rated schools for the student body here, offering students sports in the fall, winter and spring like badminton, ice hockey and unified basketball.Nearby historic and educational attractions
Despite the distance from the downtown that provides the relaxed atmosphere, the more populated area’s shopping and dining options are never far away. From Wild Ginger’s Mediterranean cuisine to Great Neck Diner’s all-day breakfast, and even to the inviting deli surroundings of Kensington Kosher Delicatessen, there are plenty of local outlets with options for residents to dive into. Other establishments include the hybrid building of the Colony Pharmacy and Benny’s Barbershop, as well as more wide-ranging offerings at the local Everfresh Supermarket or Target. A little further away, even more outlets can be found. “Middleneck Road isn’t really walking distance,” Kanfer says, “but that’s where you’ll find restaurants, regular shopping and entertainment all the way down.”City views across the bay
The Long Island Rail Road branch serving the neighborhood can move commuters from Great Neck Station to Penn Station in about half an hour, making for a quick jaunt into the city. The N57 bus has a Great Neck Loop route that keeps those it transports in the loop of their day. “It’s pretty easy to get places,” Kanfer says. “The closest big street is Bayview Avenue, which takes people all the way down to North Boulevard. You can head towards the highways or take it straight east to the Queensboro Bridge.” From the shores of Saddle Rock / Harbor Hills, residents can also catch sight of the New York City skyline from across the bay.Close by downtown’s dining options
One of Saddle Rock / Harbor Hills’ primary landmarks is the Saddle Rock Grist Mill, marked on the National Register of Historic Places and now serving as a museum. “It’s one of the last tidal mills in the country,” Kanfer says. Patriot Day services are held at the 9-11 Memorial Bridge each year. Along the water, residents can bike or run, and the nearby Parkwood Sports Complex has a track, sports courts, athletic fields, indoor ice skating and a lazy river pool. “The main branch of the Great Neck Library has a lot of programs for children and adults,” Kanfer says. “There’s author visits, speaker series, community events and even blood drives. It’s a major hub of activity and programming.”
