Sagamore Hills offers relaxed residential living close to parks
A quiet residential atmosphere, highly rated schools and a bounty of parks draw buyers to Sagamore Hills, a township of just under 11,000 people halfway between Cleveland and Akron. The community offers straightforward commutes to both cities and a relaxed home base to return to at the end of the day. Residents also enjoy easy access to the largest Cleveland Metroparks reservation and Cuyahoga Valley National Park. “Sagamore Hills is a bedroom community,” says Holly Zingale, a Realtor with Keller Williams Chervenic Realty. She says when buyers are looking for homes in the Nordonia Hills City School District area, “Sagamore Hills would be the first place people would choose.”
Access to a national park, ski resorts and river recreation
Sagamore Hills borders the 4,300-acre Brecksville Reservation, which has multiple paths for hiking, biking and horseback riding, and hugs Cuyahoga Valley National Park, another hiking destination with 125 miles of trails past caverns, waterfalls and streams. The nearby Station Road Bridge Trailhead offers access to the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad and the Cuyahoga River Water Trail, a recreational river paddling route. “It’s close to Brandywine Ski Run, so there’s skiing over there,” Zingale says. “There are two ski resorts right down the street from each other. Boston Mills is in Peninsula, and Brandywine Ski Run is in Sagamore Hills.” Residents are also less than 5 miles from MGM Northfield Park.
Townhouses and post-war homes on roomy lots
Zingale says maintaining a quiet atmosphere is a priority for residents. “They want to keep it a bedroom community,” she says. “There’s really nowhere else to put anything because it’s all houses and they all have more land.” Midcentury home styles like Cape Cod, ranch-style, and split- and bi-level are common, and most homes sit on roomy parcels with green lawns and mature trees. “A lot of the older houses have acre lots or more because when people started building houses there, they had wells and septic [systems]… so that’s why the lots are a lot bigger over there,” Zingale says. Condos typically range from $100,000 to $300,000, but four-bedroom units and detached townhouses can sell for up to $375,000. A typical two- or three-bedroom single-family home costs between $200,000 and $350,000, while New Traditional homes built after the 1990s range from $300,000 to $500,000. Larger properties on spacious lots sell for $550,000 to $730,000.
Strong athletics and academics at Nordonia Hills schools
Most students attend schools in the Nordonia Hills City School District, which also serves Macedonia, Northfield and Northfield Center. Kids may begin at Rushwood Elementary School or Northfield Elementary School, both graded A-minus by Niche. Lee Eaton Intermediate and Nordonia Middle School both receive an A rating. The B-plus-rated Nordonia High School offers dual-enrollment and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. It is known for the Knights football team, which has produced NFL alums like Denzel Ward, a cornerback for the Cleveland Browns.
Within a 30-minute drive of Cleveland and Akron
The community is sandwiched between Interstates 77 and 271, and Route 82 crosses through the township's center. The area is car-dependent, but the 34-mile Metro Parks Bike and Hike Trail offers an off-road recreation and transportation alternative. Drivers are about 20 miles from Akron, Cleveland and Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. Brecksville Health and Surgery Center has the closest emergency room about 10 miles away.
Macedonia has shops and restaurants a few miles from home
Sagamore Hills is mostly residential, but Sagamore Square Shopping Center has a small grocery store and Teresa’s Pizza, a casual joint for pies and subs. The Basement Sports Bar and Grill is a game-day staple, while Dos Coronas serves up flavorful Mexican dishes. Most folks drive a few miles to Macedonia to grab groceries at Giant Eagle, Aldi or Walmart. The main thoroughfare of Route 82/Aurora Road is lined with shopping centers and big-box retailers like Target, Lowe’s and Nordstrom Rack. Macedonia Commons features a Hobby Lobby, Home Depot and Kohl’s.
