Early 20th-century homes neighbor brand-new construction
Southeast St. Charles encapsulates both the city’s original architecture and brand-new construction. Colonial Revivals, ranch-style homes and bilevels date back to the early-to-mid 20th century. Meanwhile, new construction with new traditional architecture has increased over the last decade. Sidewalks outline their paved driveways, while a mix of new and old-growth trees shade the streets below. Additionally, homebuyers can expect a mix of attached and detached garages. Street parking is also common. Most properties range in price from $200,000 to $600,000, with brand-new builds averaging to around $780,000. Townhome developments with similar architecture offer units priced between $270,000 and $360,000.St. Charles East High School offers a public recreation center
Students attend St. Charles Community Unit School District 303, beginning at Munhall Elementary School. Located on 13th Avenue, Munhall is within walking distance for many families. Wredling Middle School ranks No. 1 in Kane County. The campus sits next door to St. Charles East High School on Dunham Road, 3 miles north. East High offers various Advanced Placement courses and off-campus dual credit opportunities through the Fox Valley Career Center and Elgin Community College. The John B. Norris Recreation Center is on campus, a public facility owned by the school district. An Olympic-sized swimming pool and fitness center cater to students and residents alike. All three schools earn an A on Niche.Accessing the Fox River Trail from Riverside Park
Southeast St. Charles offers a handful of walkable community green spaces. Homes surround Rotary Park’s playground and shaded field, while Cambridge Park offers a paved walking path. Closer to the water, the parking lot at Riverside Park grants access to the Fox River Trail. The nearly 46-mile path passes through St. Charles on its way south to Batavia. Residents can hop on at Riverside and cross through several waterfront parks on the way down, including Island Park just south of State Street. Those heading north will pass straight through Downtown St. Charles. Langum Park is similarly on the waterfront. The park’s ball fields, tennis courts and open fields are popular in the warmer months. Come winter, guests gather at the Langum sled hill and outdoor ice rink. Local softball and baseball leagues call the East Side Sports Complex home base. Beyond the facility’s ball fields, guests will find a skate park, dog park and various volleyball, tennis and basketball courts.Main Street’s “Colonial Kitchen Sink”
Downtown St. Charles is a hub packed with entertainment and eateries. “They’ve done a great job developing the city, which has brought a lot of great dining options to the area,” says Roger Erikson, a longtime local and senior global real estate advisor with Coldwell Banker. “St. Charles has a couple of really nice Italian places, and there’s this great cake place on the west side.” The downtown scene is less than a mile from most homes, from white tablecloth dining at La Zaza Trattoria to mini cupcakes at Smallcakes A Cupcakery to live performances at Arcada Theatre. Small businesses and family-owned eateries line Main Street as it stretches east toward Lakewood. Hoarder’s Trading Post sells vinyl records, while the Industrial Treasures antique mall is known for its maximalist setup of vintage cameras and eclectic furniture. Colonial Café is an ice cream and brunch spot, serving classic American breakfast plates with signature red coffee mugs. The ice cream bar famously makes a “Kitchen Sink” sundae served in an actual miniature kitchen sink. Those who finish the dish earn a reward: A red sticker that reads, “I ate a colonial kitchen sink.” As for big-box retailers and grocers, Main Street houses TJ Maxx, Target and Jewel-Osco.Heading downtown for the Electric Christmas Parade
A majority of the city’s annual events take place downtown. In the fall, Scarecrow Weekend showcases nearly 100 handmade scarecrows created by residents and local organizations. “All of the visitors get to vote on their favorites. Then, they tally up the votes and give out prizes,” Erikson says. “There’s a big carnival aspect, too. They have rides and vendors.” Over the holidays, the Electric Christmas Parade is a hit for families. The Saturday after Thanksgiving, residents line the sidewalks of Main Street in anticipation. “It really kicks off the holiday season,” he continues. “Everyone puts lights on their cars and drives down Main Street. Our office is on Main, so we can watch the parade from the window to stay warm.” Colonial Café is known to participate, decking out their iconic Kitchen Sink Truck with lights and wreaths. The industrial sector on Tyler Road
Residents of Southeast St. Charles are primarily car-dependent. Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital sits 4 miles south, across the Fox River. The city’s industrial hub comprises manufacturers, distributors, packaging and maintenance centers just east of Tyler Road. Employees in the neighborhood live within a mile of these facilities, which separate residents from the DuPage Airport Authority 2 miles east. The general aviation airport is mainly used for business. Chicago commuters make the 45-mile drive east on Interstates 290 and 88. Those taking the Metra are closest to Geneva station, 3 miles south. Riders can expect an hour-long ride to the Windy City. Out-of-state travelers often fly commercially from Chicago O’Hare International Airport, 30 miles into the commute.
