Quiet streets and a unique history tied to car building history

In 1917, entrepreneur Samuel Pandolfo came to St. Cloud on a mission to compete with Detroit’s indomitable automobile industry. Envisioning his own empire, he created Pan-Town-on-the-Mississippi, a six-block residential community with Craftsman-style homes for his factory’s workers. Legal problems foiled Pandolfo's business plans. While his company shuttered within 5 years, its legacy has survived for over a century as the greater Pantown community expanded beyond the historic district. Today, ranch-style homes built in the ensuing decades fill the rest of the community, mixed with some light industry but close to car-oriented shopping centers, city parks and a neighborhood brewery bearing the Pantown name.

A legend living beneath the historic district's homes

The Pantown Neighborhood Historic District comprises six partial blocks that run along Veterans Drive, from 33rd Avenue North to 29th Avenue North. More than two dozen Craftsman-style homes with old sidewalks in front roughly outline the district. The homes come in various colors and showcase a combination of unique wood detailing, varying-styled roofs, and enduring narrow front walkways. Doors in the basements of these homes once provided entry to a network of tunnels that connected Pan Motor Company employees to the factory for easy commutes to work. Now sealed, these tunnels have since inspired both local folklore and literature. Filling the neighborhood’s remaining quiet grid-like streets are mid-1900s ranch-style homes that sit atop similar quarter-acre lots featuring new and old-growth oak trees that turn yards orange in the fall. Potential homebuyers can expect a price range from $150,000 to $290,000, depending on size and condition.

Running errands along Great River Road

Local history and craft beer come together at Pantown Brewing Company, located off 33rd Avenue North, at the former the Pan Motor Company factory where the manufacturer built about 700 cars during its brief run. The brewery honors its inspiration with a mural containing vintage photos of Pan-Town-on-the-Mississippi. Drinks also flow during the bustling happy hours of Hajime Asian Bistro. The restaurant, known for its sushi, sits within a large commercial development on Great River Road, one of St. Cloud's main north-south highways. Many of the large highway shopping district’s retailers, including Target and Macy’s, are inside the Crossroads Center shopping mall. However, residents can visit other major retailers and supermarkets like Cash Wise Foods in the adjacent retail centers. The area also contains smaller businesses like the Nasiib Grocery Store and Viet-Tien International Market and Deli.

Pending Pantown and Centennial Park updates

Pantown Park on the community’s northern side is a stroll away from most homes. For years, the park has welcomed little ones to climb about the playground in its Rainbow Corner and cool off in its free wading pool during the summer months. However, the park is currently under renovation alongside nearby Centennial Park as a part of the city’s park improvement plan, set to finish in 2025. Both will receive new playgrounds, sizeable splash pads and an updated skating rink. When Minnesota snows roll in, locals head to the hills of surrounding parks. “Calvary Hill Park is the area’s known go-to spot, but Hester Park is the hidden gem for sledding,” says Priccilla Carpenter, a native of St. Cloud.

Earning college credits at Apollo High School

Prekindergarten through fifth-grade students will enroll at Madison Elementary School at the end of summer, which maintains a C rating on Niche. Older students will head to North Junior High School, which also holds a C rating, before attending Apollo High School. The Eagles maintain a B-minus rating and participate in Discovery Academy. The program, offered through St. Cloud Technical and Community College, allows sophomore through senior students to explore different career options through hands-on courses and internships while receiving transferable college credits. Offerings include Automotive Suspension & Alignment, Print Reading & Math Applications and several others.

Catching live shows at George Lake Park

Throughout summer, folks from around the city gather by the water at George Lake Park, 2 miles southeast of the community, to enjoy the tunes of local musicians. “Summertime by George! is a popular event,” Carpenter says. “Every Wednesday evening, the park has a band and a bunch of food trucks. Businesses also come out and set up tents to hand things out and such." From May through October, the St. Cloud Area Farmers Market attracts big crowds to the spacious Lady Slipper parking lot downtown every Saturday morning. Alongside fresh produce, those making the trip downtown can peruse local vendors who sell fresh-baked bread, artisanal goods and more.

Getting around on Interstate 94

Interstate 94 sits 6 miles south, granting 67-mile drives southeast to Minneapolis. The same route leads to flights at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, located 13 miles farther in the same direction. Shorter drives lead to Downtown St. Cloud 2 miles southeast and St. Cloud VA Medical Center just over a mile northwest. Similarly, the campuses of St. Cloud State University and St. Cloud Technical & Community College are both within 3 miles of the neighborhood. Residents can also take advantage of six Metro Bus stops located around the community.
