Westwood Parkway sits between St. Cloud and Waite Park
Though Westwood Parkway is an established St. Cloud community, residents spend ample time shopping, dining and commuting into the adjacent city of Waite Park. “On one street, you’re in St. Cloud, and on another, you’re in Waite Park,” explains Mary Ellen Richter, a local broker with Kerber Castle Realty Group. “As a lifelong resident of St. Cloud, sometimes I don’t even know which city I’m in. I don’t think many of us do!” Luxury apartments constructed in the early 2000s mark the entrance to Westwood Parkway’s residential streets. While technically located in St. Cloud, the neighborhood is at the far west end of the city, 5 miles from downtown and closer to stone quarries and commercial industries along Waite Park’s legacy railroad corridors and oft-congested highways.

Homes & townhomes include ample garage space
Westwood Parkway’s single-family snout homes were mainly constructed in the early 2000s. Aptly named for their protruding garages, these snout homes swing between brick and shingle variants, priced between $190,000 and $350,000, below average for St. Cloud. Townhomes with similar architecture include their own two-car garages and short, paved driveways, ranging in price from $170,000 to $200,000. Without tree cover, their sidewalks and uniformly square lawns receive direct sunlight throughout the year—Something most residents don’t seem to mind. “My grandma has lived in that area since I was born, so I grew up walking through the neighborhood,” says Priccilla Carpenter, a local Realtor with Premier Real Estate Services. “You’ll see people walking their dogs, kids heading to the parks, and you can still see wildlife since there’s not a lot of inner city traffic.”

St. Cloud Public Schools are geared toward enrichment
Families of Westwood Parkway attend the St. Cloud Public School District, beginning at Westwood Elementary. With a B on Niche, Westwood encourages talent development and enrichment through extracurricular programs in robotics, mathematics and even vocabulary. North Junior High School continues honing these skills through Accelerated Math and Advanced Language Arts courses. With a C-plus on Niche, the school even provides a dual language immersion program to adequately prepare international students for attendance at Apollo Senior High School. As one of two secondary schools in the district, Apollo offers 19 Advanced Placement courses alongside dual enrollment and career prep programs to promote success post-graduation. Apollo Senior High School earns a B-minus on Niche, scoring highest in diversity, teaching and college prep.

Commuters in Westwood Parkway are car-dependent
Commuters in Westwood Parkway are primarily car-dependent, reflected by the area’s many front-facing garages. “Even though I’ve never taken the bus myself, the lines are sometimes important for tenants living in the apartments,” Carpenter says, referring to the St. Cloud Metro Bus stops surrounding nearby apartment buildings. Drivers and riders alike can head 2 miles east to St. Cloud VA Medical Center, one of the city’s largest employers and the nearest emergency room. Those commuting to the Twin Cities can expect a 71-mile drive southeast on Interstate 94. Though St. Cloud Regional Airport sits 11 miles east, the facility mainly caters to charter and seasonal commercial flights. Most out-of-state travelers instead fly from Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, 81 miles southeast.
Taking the backroads to Division Street
Division Street’s array of shopping and dining options sits about 3 miles south of Westwood Parkway, but Carpenter recommends taking alternative routes to reach it. “Division is one of the busiest streets in St. Cloud,” she says. “It’s pretty easy to shoot right over and jump in. But over the years it’s seemed more like you’re jumping into traffic. If you know the St. Cloud area, you’re taking the backroads.” Big-name retail hubs like Home Depot and Best Buy surround grocery stores like Fresh Thyme Market and Cash Wise Foods. National chains like Target and JCPenney anchor the Crossroads Center shopping mall at the intersection of Division and Route 15. Interspersed is a laundry list of chain eateries from Culver’s to Chick-fil-A, but many opt for the area’s locally-owned haunts, including Park Diner. Retro, stainless steel doors mark the entrance to this classic 50s-themed café, serving everything from flapjack stacks to crinkle-cut fries. Closer to home, Anton’s Restaurant is a family-owned steakhouse on the Sauk River with a log-cabin ambiance overlooking the water.

Local hockey & baseball teams compete at the MAC
Rivers Edge Park borders the Sauk River about 2 miles south of Westwood Parkway, home to the Lake Wobegon Trail Head. Stretching 65 miles from Waite Park to Osakis, a small lakeside village, the trail is popular for cycling and offers 10 feet on either side for riders to turn back at any time. Additionally, Rivers Edge features ball fields, batting cages, a disc golf couse, pickleball courts and a splash pad for the little ones. The park’s hockey and skating rinks accompany a seasonal warming house in the winter. Just north, St. Cloud’s Municipal Athletic Complex is colloquially nicknamed “the MAC.” Local hockey and baseball teams host playoff games and tournaments at the complex, while nearby golfers flock to the public, 9-hole golf course next door. “Westwood Parkway is really close to the quarries, too,” Richter says, referring to the 683-acre Quarry Park and Nature Preserve 5 miles south. “People can swim and hike, and there’s cross-country skiing in the winter.” Woodlands, wetlands and unquarried bedrock each offer unique views from the park’s many paths.

Wednesday night concerts at Lake George Park
Lake George Park sits 5 miles east of Westwood Parkway in the heart of St. Cloud. The park is a well-loved gathering space for the city’s annual festivities. “Every Wednesday in the summer, they throw this massive event with free concerts, and there’s always a bunch of food trucks,” Carpenter says. The festival, Summertime by George, is hosted by the Rotary Club of St. Cloud. From June through August, residents from across the city flock to the park to browse local vendors and artisans. “Families go, everyone goes; It’s always super busy.” The series overlaps with Granite City Days, a weekend-long festival in June celebrating St. Cloud’s local flavor. The celebration starts with St. Cloud State University’s Lemonade Concert and Art Fair, a well-known campus tradition featuring 150 art vendors of all ages. Guests can expect fishing tournaments, petting zoos, and a handful of performances by regional musicians on the days to follow.
