Saint Joseph offers single-family homes east of Champaign-Urbana
The village of Saint Joseph, just east of Champaign-Urbana, is a quiet residential community with single-family homes. People living here often work for top Champaign employers like Carle Foundation Hospital, Kraft Heinz and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. In addition to proximity to employers, Saint Joseph has a highly rated school district, attracting residents who want to raise families there. “It’s a clean city, and it’s very well managed,” says Realtor Steve Littlefield with Keller Williams Realty. "It has an extremely low crime rate. People like to go to athletic events, both local and at the university. It’s just generally a good place to raise a family.”
Pre-2010 single-family homes
Nearly all of the village’s housing options are pre-2010 single-family homes, often ranch-style, bi- or split-level and New Traditional homes. “Unfortunately, we haven’t had a new subdivision in the past 15 years,” Littlefield says. According to Littlefield, most residents here own their properties. Residential streets here are quiet and tree-lined. Some streets have sidewalks while others do not, and some do not have curbs. Sales prices typically fall between $175,000 and $325,000, though occasionally, larger homes will hit the market with asking prices between $450,000 and $550,000. Saint Joseph has a 2 out of 10 CAP Index Crime Score, well below the national average of 4.
Academics and athletics shine at Saint Joseph schools
St. Joseph Community Consolidated School District No. 169 gets an overall A-minus grade from Niche, as do both of its schools, St. Joseph Elementary and St. Joseph Middle. St. Joseph-Ogden High School receives a B-plus. “A lot of people move here for the school district,” Littlefield says. “Saint Joseph has great school districts, not only academically, but athletically, as well.” St. Joseph-Ogden High School students can sign up for sports such as baseball, basketball and cross country, and activities including art club, band and bass fishing. In nearby Champaign, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign enrolls about 35,000 undergraduates annually.
Parks and the Kickapoo Rail Trail
The St. Joseph Community Sports Complex features baseball, softball, soccer and football fields as well as basketball courts. Hackler Park has a playground, soccer field and picnic pavilion, and Kolb Park has a playground, basketball court, tennis court and pavilion. The Kickapoo Rail Trail currently connects Saint Joseph to Urbana, and will one day extend farther east to Kickapoo State Park in Vermilion County.
