St. Joseph is a busy summertime destination and a connected community

St. Joseph offers a blend of lakefront living, vacation destinations and small-town connections. Part of the so-called Riviera of the Midwest, a region along Lake Michigan with sandy beaches, thousands of visitors explore the waterfront, marinas and downtown attractions, and residents enjoy the community’s scenic views, cuisine and events year-round. “There are so many different versions of St. Joseph,” says Paul Knapp, longtime resident and executive director of St. Joseph Today. “Folks come from all over the Midwest to enjoy our community in the summer, but also, this is a town where people know your name.” Homes in the area cater to various lifestyles and price points. Recreation extends beyond shoreline destinations, and two main highways keep the area connected to surrounding communities.

Lake Michigan and downtown attractions draw tourists and locals

The community’s sprawling access to Lake Michigan and the St. Joseph River makes it a major vacation destination. People spend entire summers boating, fishing, kayaking and swimming. The city is also home to The Whirlpool Compass Fountain, one of the state’s biggest splash pads. Away from the water, Lake Bluff Park features various memorials and a bandshell for outdoor concerts. John & Dede Howard Trail caters to hikers and cyclists, and spots like Kiesel Overlook offer scenic views from wooded alcoves and colorful boardwalks. Kiwanis Park’s playground is under construction, but the skate and off-leash dog parks remain open.

Downtown attractions include the historic merry-go-round at Silver Beach. Curious Kids’ Museum has interactive exhibits, ranging from a mini farmers market and a 1940s-era Michigan farm to a wind tunnel and a volcano. Krasl Art Center’s galleries have permanent and rotating works and regularly host workshops and events.

Upscale and laid-back fare at downtown bistros and bars

Downtown is a hub for dining. The district offers an assortment of cafés, breweries, bistros and bars serving upscale and laid-back fare. Several restaurants offer outdoor seating or rooftop patios with views of Lake Michigan. Knapp says Silver Beach Pizza is a cornerstone of downtown, even though it’s tucked inside the Amtrak station. “It’s the place you go to when your kid has Little League or after you’ve spent the day at the beach. In summer, it can be a two- to three-hour wait to get a table,” he says. Residents shop at a few gourmet grocery stores, supermarkets and a seasonal farmers market.

Neighborhoods range from lakefront living to suburbia

The city’s liveliness extends to its neighborhoods. “You’ll see kids running around, catching fireflies and jumping on trampolines,” Knapp says. “Yards are full of bikes, and baseball fields are full of teams.” Sidewalks and mature trees line wide roads and neatly trimmed lawns. Architecture is diverse, ranging from ranch-style homes, bungalows and new traditional houses to custom lakeside estates and towering waterfront condominiums. Single-family homes and condominiums typically cost between $120,000 and $800,000, but the city’s median price is $335,000. Custom estates and lakefront property prices begin at around $900,000 and cap around $3 million.

Knapp says that although the city is mostly surrounded by water, flooding is generally a minor issue. However, the lakeshore is susceptible to erosion. “Public beaches are pretty well protected and maintained, but many homeowners have put in breakers and rock walls to help prevent erosion,” he says.

St. Joseph’s events draw people outside throughout the year

Annual events draw even more people to the city. The Blossomtime Festival welcomes spring and summer with The Grand Floral Parade, which features 120 impressively arranged floral floats and participating acts. The event celebrates its 120th anniversary in 2026. In July, bands play tunes as the sun sets during the Lake Breeze Music Festival, and vendors sell handcrafted goods at the Krasl Art Fair. “When the fall and winter happen, the town becomes our own,” Knapp says. “The events are really locally driven.” December means the bluff is illuminated with millions of twinkling lights. People attend the tree lighting and watch the Reindog Parade, where pets dress up in festive costumes. In February, the St. Joe Winter Beer Fest sells out quickly. “It’s a total locals party,” Knapp says. “We know the weather isn’t going to be great, but it’s an excuse to get outside and get together.”

The community has highway access, a train station and downtown parking

Business Loop 94 and State Route 63 are the city’s primary thoroughfares, converging to create Main Street. Parking downtown is typically free, except during tourist season. The west side of Main Street converts to paid parking from mid-May to mid-September, but the east side remains free. Although most residents travel by car, the city also has an Amtrak station. Corewell Health Lakeland Hospitals is inside the city, and the nearest commercial airport is 33 miles away in South Bend, Indiana.

St. Joseph has its own public schools

Students attend St. Joseph Public Schools, which has three elementary school options. Kids integrate at Upton Middle School, followed by St. Joseph High School. Both schools have A ratings from Niche. St. Joseph High students taking industrial technology courses learn various hands-on skills, from mechatronics to introductory furniture making.
