East St. Joseph has historic architecture and modern amenities

Stretching as far as the One Hundred and Two River, East St. Joseph is a blend of modern suburban life and the historic streets the city is known for. “When you get beyond Woodbine Road, you’re in the newer areas of town,” says Christina McAllister, a Realtor with Re/Max Professionals. New construction is available in several areas, while midcentury designs are frequently mixed in with centennial homes. Residents are also attracted to the area for its proximity to several schools, public facilities and various shopping and dining options.

Many neo-traditional homes are in the northern end of the neighborhood

The western reaches of the neighborhood have an urban grid of turn-of-the-century Cape Cods and bungalows. Homes here are priced between the $40,000s and $210,000s, depending on the level of restoration. Past Interstate 29, midcentury split-levels and ranch-style homes are more common, selling between the $110,000s and $350,000s. Contemporary townhouses are also popular, generally ranging from the $160,000s to the $390,000s, based on size and amenities. The latest construction is in the northern section of the neighborhood, with neo-traditional homes priced to sell between the $290,000s and $590,000s.

Students can begin at Mark Twain Elementary before heading to Truman Middle School. Both schools are in the western half of the neighborhood and have C grades from Niche. Older students can attend Central High School, which has a B. “The high school has a lot of healthy rivalries between the different sports teams,” says McAllister. “Everyone gets involved, and it’s a lot of fun.” Missouri Western State University enrolls over 5,500 students a year, offering over 100 majors and a variety of sports, Greek organizations and other extracurricular activities.

The Muny Inn Bar is a local dive bar and watering hole

East Hills Mall has over 20 stores and restaurants, including JCPenney and Texas Roadhouse. Just west of the neighborhood is North Belt Highway, which also has a wide selection of retail and chain eateries. Groceries are available at Hy-Vee or Cosentino’s Price Chopper. Patrons of Los Compadres can order classic or modern Mexican favorites, including the burrito machete stuffed with three kinds of meat and topped with queso dip and chorizo. The Muny Inn Bar is a local dive bar with beers on tap and the Chiefs on TV.

Mark Youngdahl Urban Conservation Area has over 85 acres of nature

Arrowhead Park and Deer Park East are two of the neighborhood’s green spaces, with playground equipment and open fields for soccer games. The Mark Youngdahl Urban Conservation Area hosts over 75 tree species on its 85-acre lot. Locals can visit to see deer, foxes and waterfowl, or wander one of its scenic trails. History enthusiasts can visit the memorial of Walter Cronkite, a broadcast journalist and St. Joseph native.
