A neighborhood inspired by “Hollywood”
While St. Louis may be known as the Gateway to the West, Holly Hills drew inspiration from the elegance of Hollywood when development began in the 1920s. The neighborhood might not have the star power of Southern California, but historic brick homes and walkability combine to create a desirable suburban neighborhood in South St. Louis. “Holly Hills is one of those neighborhoods that’s really sought after,” says Jeffery Uren, team leader for the STL group at Worth Clark Realty. “As kids get older, families look to move here because it's one of the more walkable neighborhoods in the city.” Commuters of the area have direct access to the downtown areas of St. Louis and the expansive green spaces of Carondelet Park, which sits directly south of the neighborhood.

Elegant brick houses
Housing dates back to the 1920s when developers sought to create Hollywood-style homes of different sizes that displayed grace and elegance. This is reflected in the neighborhood's eclectic mix of Craftsman, Tudor revivals, and Bavarian-style residences. “There is a good mix of massive, smaller, and medium size homes,” says Uren. “A lot of people can afford to live here because of the difference in prices.” Smaller, two-bedroom houses sell for $200,000, while larger, brick Tudor Revivals can top $600,000. Sidewalk-lined streets back up to towering oak trees and well-manicured lawns. Inventory is limited, and houses stay on the market well below the national average.

Local eateries in the neighborhood
Holly Hills is primarily residential, but local eateries throughout the neighborhood ensure residents are never far from a tasty bite to eat. The Stellar Hog is a family-owned barbeque joint that carries on the St. Louis’ legacy of world-class barbecue with its heaping servings of brisket and pulled pork. The Haven is busiest on gameday, and sports fans can enjoy a Cardinals baseball game in a fun, lively atmosphere. Schnucks provides the neighborhood with weekly groceries and residents can head to Loughborough Commons nearby for retail shopping. Epiphany Lutheran Church serves the area.

Trick-or-Treat in Holly Hills
Holly Hills comes alive every Halloween during the annual Pumpkin Parade. The block party runs every year from 1:00 – 9:00, and residents are encouraged to bring drinks, lawn chairs, and dishes for a potluck. “Holly Hills is the self-proclaimed Halloween neighborhood of St. Louis,” Uren says.

Recreation anchored by Carondelet Park
One stroll through Carondelet Park will reveal expansive green space, two stocked lakes, and an array of walking trails. Best of all, the park, which is the third biggest in St. Louis, is within walking distance of most Holly Hills residents as it's directly south of the neighborhood. “Carondelet is a pretty huge park,” says Uren. “There are paths good for walking and running and secondary paths for bicyclists.” Indoor recreation is also available at the Carondelet Park Recreation Complex, operated by the YMCA. Sports enthusiasts will feel right at home on the park’s baseball diamonds and tennis courts. During the summer, live music on Sunday nights is standard, as the Carondelet Concert Series runs from June through July and features free showcases of local artists.

Easy access to downtown St. Louis
“Holly Hills is extremely drivable as it's really close to Highway 55,” Uren says. “But the neighborhood still seems call and serene even with the proximity.” Commuters are under eight miles away from the vibrant commercial areas and major sporting events of downtown St. Louis. Public Transportation is also a viable option, as the Metro Transit services many bus stops throughout the neighborhood. Those looking to travel further can catch a flight at St. Louis Lamber International Airport, 23 miles away.
