A pocket of St. Louis history with plenty of quaint red brick homes
The community of Mark Twain is a result of St. Louis’ immense growth in the late 19th century. Named for the famous Missouri-born author, this mostly residential pocket of the city expanded as St. Louis’ development spilled west. As such, most of the housing stock here dates back to the early 20th century and is primarily comprised of bungalow and cottage designs. "It's not the most in-demand neighborhood, but it's becoming in-demand because lenders are investing in that neighborhood," says Realtor Sandra Haynes of Realty Unlimited, who has sold properties on referral in north St. Louis for about 15 years.

Historic frames offer modern potential
This neighborhood's most prevalent housing styles include one- and two-story bungalows and cottages constructed using St. Louis’ signature red brick. Conditions can vary from house to house, with some in need of major repairs, while others were recently updated. "They're tearing down most of the homes in the neighborhood, those they can't do any repairs to," Haynes says. "They're improving upon it to get homebuyers back in. Because there's mostly residents there now who have been there for a long time, and their children moved out of the neighborhood into their own homes." Mark Twain is an urban neighborhood with sidewalks lining every block. Densely populated, homes here aren’t built so close together that they don’t have at least a little room for their lawns. Lot sizes are often about a tenth-of-an-acre or less. Properties here vary in price but generally sell for between $40,000 to $165,000 based on the condition. Time on the market can vary but competitively priced homes tend to sell after 75 days on the market.

The atmosphere of this area is O.K. It isn't the best area I've lived in, but it's nice for the elderly. I would live there again because my family stays there. I've never been out of the country so I can't say how it is compared to anywhere else.
