Gingerbread houses with a high rate of home ownership in northern St. Louis
The brick properties of North Pointe, with striped awnings and arched stone doorways, resemble a line of decorated gingerbread houses. The homes in this northside neighborhood were built in the early 1900s, and a thriving, middle-class African American community developed here in the 1960s. The north side of St. Louis has historically been cut off from city support — somewhat literally by the rushing Interstate 70. However, North Pointe has a high rate of homeownership, at 77%, and an active network of community support organizations. Still, prices here tend to be more affordable than most of the city, more due to location than the quality of craftsmanship. "Let's say there's a $110,000 house in North Pointe with three bedrooms, two baths and a garage," says Realtor Kevin Vaughn of Coldwell Banker, who has sold homes in the area for over 15 years. "If you put those houses in other areas like Kirkwood or Webster, the home is going to be closer to $275,000."
Most homes sell for between $24,000 for a fixer-upper and $198,000 for a refurbished property.
If you're looking for a home in North Pointe, it's more likely than not a gingerbread house.

North Pointe's sturdy brick homes often feature Tudor rooflines
Though it's possible to see a post-World War II ranch-style houses, most properties in North Pointe were built between 1920 and 1940. Typical of that time, they are made with brick and often feature the distinctive pointy rooflines of Tudor architecture. "Buyers in that area like the brick houses because they're sturdy, and there's not a lot of maintenance to them," Vaughn says. Vinyl awnings shield windows, and front porches are filled with potted plants and rocking chairs. It's a well-manicured area, and the similarities in architecture styles create a sense of uniformity, even though each has its own character. Most streets are lined with sidewalks and streetlamps. Fixer-uppers can start at as low as $20,000, and newly renovated properties go for up to $175,000, significantly below the average for St. Louis.
The city of St. Louis has experienced significant flooding in the past, but according to maps from the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District, North Pointe is in a low-risk zone. In addition, the homes closest to the railroad tracks should expect some noise when the train comes through.
There is a noticeable pattern of design to North Pointe's homes.

Community organizations and support
The city-wide organization Urban League is a leader in promoting a safer north St. Louis community, with initiatives like "Block Builders" — which involves beautification, increased lighting and doorbell cameras for the highest-risk neighborhoods. Urban League's St. Louis County Outreach Center location is just a few blocks away from North Pointe, providing resources like a regular food pantry and clothing closet.
Community support in North Pointe can also be found at local houses of worship. New NorthSide Missionary Baptist Church hosts exercise classes for the elderly, diaper drives and Friday fish fry's. City Hope Bible Church has a weekly food pantry on Tuesdays, and Muhammad Mosque 28 organizes a yearly food distribution for unhoused individuals.

Local elementary schools and federally funded childcare at Urban League
The homes south of the train tracks are zoned for Herzog Elementary, and those to the north are zoned for Earl Nance Senior Elementary. Most homes are less than a mile from their respective schools. Nance Elementary received a 2024 State and National School of Character award, the first in north St. Louis to ever do so. The award recognizes an approach to school improvement that focuses on student character. Older kids are zoned for Yeatman-Liddell Middle and Vashon High School. Vashon is known for its boys basketball program, which regularly makes it to the state championships, and a strong sense of graduate pride, with an annual Alumni Block Party that gets a turnout in the hundreds. All four of these St. Louis Public Schools get a D-plus rating on Niche.
For younger kids, there are several daycare and preschool options in the area. One of the most prominent is The Urban League Head Start Program, a federally funded institution that provides education to low-income families for kids ages six weeks to five years. The school is less than a mile from North Pointe, on Halls Ferry Road.
Herzong Elementary has 214 students in grades PK, K-6.
Yeatman-Liddell Middle School enrolls almost 300 students in grades 6-8.
Vashon High School enrolls 577 students in grades 9-12.

A nearby park and events at the local library
The neighborhood's only public green space is Vivian Astra Park. Since it only spans an acre and has a sign that prohibits sports and picnics, Vivian Astra functions mainly as a scenic street median. So, residents have to head out of the neighborhood for recreation options. Gregory J. Carter Park is about a mile away and has a playground, baseball diamond and basketball court.
The Walnut Park Branch of the St. Louis Public Library is also less than a mile away. In addition to resources like rentable computers and wi-fi hotspots, the library front desk is filled with fliers for non-profit events. The library also partners with Operation Food Search to provide free after-school meals and activities to children aged five to 18. The Teen Gaming afternoons on Tuesdays and Thursdays are especially popular. "We try to make Walnut Park as family oriented as possible," says Raven Washington, a circulation assistant at this branch. "People come from all over the city and tell us how much they enjoy it here — how safe and comfortable it feels. That's really important to us."
Many locals like to take long walks through scenic Calvary and Bellefontaine Cemeteries.

North Pointe is 8 miles from downtown St. Louis, with a direct bus line connecting there in about 30 minutes. "North Pointe has easy access to basically anything in the area," Vaughn says. "You can get downtown in about 15 minutes, get to Clayton in about 22 minutes, and get to the airport in about 20 minutes." This easy access around town is mainly due to North Pointe's proximity to Interstate 70, which connects into downtown and the 8 miles to the St. Louis International Airport.

Less retail options than elsewhere in the city
The neighborhood's north side has a Save A Lot for discount grocery runs, and there are a few small restaurants, including St. Louis Q, a family-owned barbecue spot since 1994. There are also some barber shops and gas stations along Florissant Avenue. But in general, North Pointe has fewer retail options than other parts of the city. The Northland Shopping Center, which has a Schnucks and Aldi, is 2 miles away.
