Steady residential living in St. Louis
When Southampton’s first homes dotted the landscape in 1905, the St. Louis neighborhood was just a mixture of farms and pastures, but it developed along with the city and now boasts a vibrant commercial district, modern amenities and distinctive architecture. And though this part of the town, located about 7 miles from downtown, is well established – some would say “old” – it has found new life through its residents. “There are a lot of young professionals and young families,” says Joe Hostman, Realtor at RE/MAX Results. “It’s mainly a residential neighborhood, and that’s its appeal.”

Older homes with distinctive architecture
Southampton’s housing dates back to the early 20th century with a variety of distinctive St. Louis architecture styles. The abundance of Tudor-style cottages with steep-pitched roofs and striking chimneys, often referred to as gingerbread houses, gives the neighborhood a fairytale vibe. Art-deco’s and contemporary ranchers can also be found here. Smaller, two-bedroom houses begin at $200,000 while larger, Craftsman-style builds top $500,000. Street parking is ordinary, though most houses come with external garages in the alley. “Houses are bigger but still relatively affordable, and there are tons of families that have grown up there and stayed,” Hostman says.
The Southampton residents can be described as friendly and social.

The Macklind Business District
The neighborhood is primarily residential, but most homeowners are within walking distance from the main thoroughfare. “Southampton’s Macklind business district has a bunch of restaurants that have been around for a while and are really well known,” Hostman says. One of these is Russell’s on Macklind, a farmhouse-style eatery using house-made ingredients and locally sourced produce. Down the road, Clementine’s Naughty & Nice Creamery is a great spot to grab dessert. The Hampton Village Plaza is an iconic shopping center with Colonial-style architecture dating back to the 1930s. While the architecture may be old, the plaza has numerous modern amenities, including a Ross Dress for Less and a Schnucks for weekly groceries.
