The Ville

Century-old homes ripe for investment
The Ville's grid-pattern streets are lined with single-family homes built in the late 1800s and early 1900s. They include small bungalows and Dutch colonial-styles on quarter-acre lots, rows of nearly-touching shotgun houses and larger five-bedroom American Foursquares. Prices vary on the condition of the home. Vacant houses in need of renovations sell for around $15,000 to $35,000. Restored homes generally range from $40,000 to $75,000, though some larger homes can fetch up to $100,000. Next to many of these homes are empty lots, which developers are using to build newer bungalows, which sell for around $50,000 to $80,000. "I truly believe it is an up-and-coming neighborhood," says Brown. "And now is the opportunity to buy a house because in a few years, as these developers come in, property values will continue to appreciate. So I think there's a lot of momentum."
MetroBus stops just steps away
Locals traveling around The Ville and other areas of St. Louis can hop on a MetroBus, which has many bus stops within walking distance of neighborhood homes. It’s about a 4-mile drive to Downtown St. Louis, avoiding major highways.Historic school focused on the the arts
Students may attend either Hickey or Columbia Elementary Schools, which receive D-plus and C-minus grades, respectively. They’ll go on to Yeatman Middle and Sumner High, both of which get D-plus grades. Sumner, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, was the first all-African American school west of the Mississippi River, where the aforementioned stars attended. Today, the high school, named after abolitionist senator Charles Sumner, has been fought for by alumni and local organizations to remain open, and has implemented the Arts Pathway program as part of a recovery process to attract students interested in music, visual arts, fashion and other arts studies.Local shops and comfort food on Dr. Martin Luther King Drive
Residents can get much of their shopping and dining needs met at local shops and restaurants on Dr. Martin Luther King Drive. The main road is just steps away from houses on the south side of The Ville and just a short drive for those further north. Jaden’s Diner is a community staple, serving up soul food like oxtails and fried chicken in an intimate diner atmosphere. Locals also enjoy the lively atmosphere at Firehouse 282, a popular bar and grill with patio seating. Those who like to stay up late can hang out with friends and play darts at Harlem Tap Room, open until 3 a.m. six days a week.Rec sports, boxing and history at Tandy Recreation Center
Tandy Recreation Center, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has served the community since 1938. The indoor facility has an indoor swimming pool and a gymnasium open to the public. The rec center also offers several programs, many of which are geared toward kids, like football and basketball leagues. Residents can even join the boxing program, following in the footsteps of former heavyweight champion Sonny Liston, who grew up in The Ville. Outside, locals can have fun on the playground and play pickup games on the basketball court.
