Tower Grove East

Smokehouses, Schnucks and street eateries
The neighborhood is gradually becoming well stocked with locally owned businesses like art galleries and comic book shops, plus a few larger businesses. For a night out, locals love to get their fix of savory meat dishes at The Shaved Duck Smokehouse, such as duck confit and burnt ends pulled pork. Afterward, they walk a few blocks west to the Tick Tock Tavern and enjoy live music with craft brews in a kitschy owl-themed interior. If the weather permits, the outdoor seating area gets busy on a summer weekend. More neighborhood joints can be found to the south in the commercial district on South Grand Boulevard. Locals prepare dinner with fixings from Jay International Food, a corner market stocked with snacks, meats and produce from around the world. For larger grocery runs, a Schnucks Fresh Food location sits at the very south of the neighborhood on Cherokee Street.Community adventures in the park
One of the best-rated parks in St. Louis is right next door. A resident need only step through the stone pillars that mark Tower Grove Park’s entrance to pass into a storybook-like escape. The park is a neighborhood gathering spot where monthly Tower Grove East Adventures are organized by the local neighborhood association. These energetic picnics feature live music and rotating food trucks. There's also a farmers market every Saturday, which has so much more than just fresh produce, such as pay-what-you-can yoga classes. And in August, the flavors and melodies of the St. Louis Festival of Nations comes rolling into the park with representation for more than 75 countries.Preserved Tudor rowhomes with renovations
According to Tower Grove East Neighborhood Association Board President Danielle Langeneckert, the neighborhood is a mix of longtime residents and those who relocated here in the past decade to rehab aging properties. “You get that old-city charm with the brick exterior and the original hardwoods. Even though they may be modernized, a lot of them preserve that original charm that you can’t get in a new build,” says Langeneckert. Imposing Classical designs offer up bay windows and turrets in their rough stone exteriors while the neighborhood's many American Foursquares blend uniform stonework with natural woods. Smaller floorplans often include Prairie-style Craftsman designs with large front porches. The median price of a house on the market in Tower Grove East is $309,000, but quickly climbing past the median of $205,000 for St. Louis. Some renovated homes have sold for over $600,000.Rare offerings for tennis players
Schedule a horse-drawn carriage, and a day in Tower Grove Park will resemble what St. Louis residents experienced when it opened in 1872. Or engage in a more modern pastime, such as a pickleball match with neighbors and strangers. For extreme racquet sports fanatics, the park offers grass tennis courts, which are hard to come by – there's only six other facilities in the entire U.S. that maintain grass courts.Bus rides to MetroLink
Many of Tower Grove East's major roads have bus routes that can take riders across the city. The number 70 route on Grand Boulevard can even be taken to a MetroLink right rail stop 1 mile north of the neighborhood. Pedestrians are well served by many shaded streets with protected sidewalks. Drivers sometimes face slower commute times on Grand Boulevard and Gravois Avenue.Scholarships for students
Several schools stand in and around Tower Grove East, including Shenandoah Elementary School and Roosevelt High, which both earn Niche scores of C-minus. Students attend grades K-6 at Shenandoah before moving up to Long Middle Community Education Center. Students at Roosevelt who graduate with a 2.5 grade point average or higher are eligible for scholarships to attend in-state community colleges and technical schools.
