Renovate and rebuild in this St. Louis Park neighborhood

Home to 50,000 people and occupying 10 square miles, the city of St. Louis Park in Minneapolis is comprised of 35 individual neighborhoods, like Creekside, a small community to the south of Excelsior Boulevard. Recognizable by the 210-acre Meadowbrook Golf Course at its center, Creekside’s residential pockets bookend both sides of the course. The neighborhood is also home to Meadowbrook Park and Meadowbrook Lake, suitable for those looking to live among expansive green spaces while still being close to the city. In recent years, Creekside has undergone a renaissance of sorts, explains Realtor Joel Friday, who’s sold in the Twin Cities for nearly 20 years. “People are moving to Creekside to make money and find what they want in a house.” Recognizing the potential for growth, and offering a large stock of real estate dating back to the early ‘40s, many residents move to the area to buy older houses and either total them and rebuild, or expand and renovate. St. Louis Park’s recent trend of renovating and rebuilding has increased the area’s prices and desirability. Creekside is also right next to Methodist Hospital, making it easy for healthcare providers to get to work.

Flipped homes with golf course views

According to Friday, buyers have started to recognize the potential in the Creekside area’s older single-family home offerings, with many buying to renovate and resell. Creekside features everything from cozy three-bedroom bungalows to sprawling 6,000-square-foot estates that overlook one of the community’s golf courses. Architectural styles vary, but potential buyers can choose from midcentury cottages, bi-levels and split-levels, as well as larger traditional homes. Homes here move fast, typically selling in less than a month, and prices have risen four percent in the past year. “The market’s strong,” Friday adds, with price points starting at around $350,000 for a three-bedroom bungalow and reaching into the low millions for a fully renovated five-bedroom home. Most prices fall between $450,000 and $700,000, and the median sales price is $470,000.

Nightlife and nearby retail shopping

A popular hangout for locals since 1933, free food during happy hour buffets and on-the-house popcorn always keep Bunny’s Bar and Grill the busiest sports bar around. Creekside is also home to several distilleries, and on special occasions, residents head to their on-site cocktail bars to try drinks with house-distilled spirits. Copperwing Distillery’s bar has glass walls that allow patrons to view the distillery’s production site, and The Dampfwerk Distillery Cocktail Lounge keeps things classy with a modern, sleek atmosphere accentuated by a long, steel-topped bar. Creekside is also home to Hold The Wheat, where locals order sweet and savory gluten-free pastries like cupcakes and quiche. Down Excelsior, residents grocery shop at Fresh Thyme Market and run other errands at big-box stores like Target, Micro Center and Half Price Books.

Getting around Minneapolis

Creekside is about nine miles or a 15-minute drive from downtown Minneapolis and a 20-minute drive from the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport. The nearest medical center, Methodist Hospital, is a convenient resource and a significant employer in the area. Metro Transit has bus stops down Excelsior, but this is a car-dependent neighborhood, meaning almost all errands require the use of a car.

Let’s go fly a kite

Each spring, the Kiwanis Club of St. Louis Park hosts the Annual Kite Fly in Louisiana Oaks Park. During this event, residents enjoy picnics on the lawn, and kids bring kites with their favorite animals and movie characters on them. Anyone can participate, and the society gives out free kites for kids while supplies last. The city kicks off summer each June with the St. Louis Park Parktacular, a series of celebrations that includes a pool party, a parade and a concert in Wolfe Park.
