The heart of St. Louis Park

Home to its high school, library and community center, Lenox is the heart of St. Louis Park, an established Minneapolis suburb with highways that make it easy to get in and out of the city. Here, 1940s bungalows built along densely gridded blocks keep parks and restaurants a short walk away. During the day, residents stay active with arts and fitness classes, book clubs and library story times, and after hours, they go bowling, play tennis at the high school and bring their pups to patio happy hours. Buzzing and social, Lenox is fit for those looking to join a tight-knit community while living a short drive away from the center of the city.

1940s bungalows and newer condos

According to Realtor Gary Metchnek, who has more than 20 years of experience in Twin Cities real estate, “St. Louis Park was built out in the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s during a post-World War II boom,” so most of its housing originates from that era. “There’s been some new construction going on, some new townhouses and condo complexes,” says Realtor Michael Kootsikas, who’s sold in the area for nearly 10 years. “But the land isn’t much there anymore — it’s all been gobbled up.” The neighborhood’s single-family homes are generally small bungalows with understated exteriors, often brick or aluminum siding in neutral tones. Interior renovations are common, and some have added on to create more space for growing families. Lenox is home to West Oak Condominiums, a 2007-built condo complex with 75 units and amenities like a party room, gym and shared patio space. Prices in Lenox start around $250,000 for a small two-bedroom house or condo and reach $700,000 for a large four-bedroom remodel. Most prices fall between $300,000 and $500,000, and homes in Lenox generally cost less than the Minneapolis metro area’s average.

Walk to neighborhood parks and play tennis at St. Louis Park High School

Lenox has three neighborhood parks: Parkview Park, Freedom Park and Roxbury Park. Each offers different amenities — Parkview Park has a playground and basketball court, Freedom Park has a baseball field, and Freedom Park has a playground, basketball hoop and four square. All homes in the neighborhood are within a 15-minute walk of at least one of these three parks. Across Louisiana Avenue South, residents can explore the more expansive Louisiana Oaks Park, which has soccer fields and a walking trail around a small pond. St. Louis Park High School is in the neighborhood and lets the public use its tennis courts, even keeping the lights on until 10 p.m. to allow residents to play at night.

Bowling at Park Tavern and The Block’s pup-friendly patio

Park Tavern and The Block Food & Drink are popular hangouts in Lenox, the former a bowling alley and arcade with a full restaurant and bar and the latter serving elevated American fare on its pup-friendly patio and offering a menu of specialty dog food. For casual fare or takeout, a local might swing by Mexico City Café for a quesadilla or burrito or Parkway Pizza for a sausage-and-pepperoni slice or one of their many vegan options. Muddy Paws Cheesecake is where residents pick up desserts for special occasions, and they shop for gifts at Sota Clothing, a local boutique. The Shoppes at Knollwood is just five minutes away and houses major retailers like Nordstrom Rack and Kohl’s, as well as Cub Foods for groceries.

Getting around the Twin Cities is easy

“You have major highways surrounding and going through St. Louis Park, so getting anywhere around town is easy,” says Realtor Michael Kootsikas, who’s sold in the Twin Cities for nearly 10 years. Lenox is located along Highway 7 close to Highway 100, about seven miles or 15 minutes from downtown Minneapolis. Residents can take the Metro Transit bus to get there in about 45 minutes, or they can bike down Dakota Avenue to Cedar Lake Trail to get there in about 30 minutes. Lenox has bike lanes on major roads, making biking a feasible way of getting around, and many residents can walk to parks and restaurants from their homes. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
