Suburban tranquility with easy access to shopping

If a neighborhood called Pennsylvania Park in Minnesota isn’t confusing enough, it shouldn’t shock that its residents live on Maryland, Nevada and Oregon Avenues. Less than 10 minutes from downtown Minneapolis, Pennsylvania Park sits between an expansive nature center and the area’s top shopping destination, providing residents both tranquility and the convenience of modernity. The 2009-built West End shopping center has made northeast St. Louis Park especially desirable, offering shops, restaurants and nightlife that were once exclusive to the city. "Buyers love St. Louis Park because there's a lot to do," says Realtor Michael Kootsikas, who's sold in the Twin Cities for nearly 10 years. "West End has all the shopping and nightlife." Within Pennsylvania Park, however, residents enjoy a suburban serenity — friendly neighbors, quiet evenings and large lots lined with trees.

Ranch-style homes and bungalows in a fast-moving market

Pennsylvania Park has mostly ranch-style homes and bungalows built in the 1950s and 1960s, though many have been updated to accommodate modern lifestyles. Homes here are charming and understated, no two looking quite alike but not competing for attention. Many homes in the neighborhood have large, tree-lined front lawns, but buyers should be warned that many streets here do not have sidewalks. In Pennsylvania Park, buyers can find homes for less than the average home value in the Minneapolis metro area, and they should act fast, because homes sell after an average of 21 days, half the national average of 42. Prices tend to fall between $350,000 and $500,000 for three- to four-bedroom homes, and the average sales price, as of April 2024, was 10% higher in the past 12 months than in the 12 months prior.

Neighborhood parks, golf courses and the Westwood Hills Nature Center

Pennsylvania Park, the neighborhood's eponymous green space, offers traditional amenities like a playground and picnic table as well as athletic facilities like basketball courts and batting cages. Lamplighter Park is also located in the neighborhood, and it has a dock so residents can go fishing in Lamplighter Pond. Both parks are popular spots for Pennsylvania Park residents to enjoy picnics and watch sunsets. Just west of the neighborhood, the Westwood Hills Nature Center is a 160-acre ecosystem combining prairie, forest and marsh, and the park offers educational programs for children and adults alike. Nearby, residents can book tee times at Brookview Golf Course & Lawn Bowling, though some opt instead to join the Minneapolis Golf Club, a membership-based facility.

Restaurants and retail at The Shops at West End

Pennsylvania Park is five minutes from The Shops at West End, the area's top shopping and dining destination. "They took a space in the northeast quadrant of the city called West End and put in restaurants, a movie theater, things like that," says Realtor Joel Friday, who's sold in the Twin Cities for nearly 20 years. "It's a nice place to hang out in the evening." Among his recommendations in the shopping center are Yard House, an upscale sports bar, and Rojo Mexican Grill. West End also has grocery stores like Cub and Costco and big-box retailers like PetSmart and The Home Depot.
