Shopping and dining and parks, oh my
Wolfe Park offers quiet suburban living with all the urban amenities the Twin City metro is known for, on the east side of Saint Louis Park, less than 7 miles south of downtown Minneapolis. “It’s super convenient to some fun walking destinations, like the shopping center at Excelsior & Grand,” says Coldwell Banker Realtor Steven Schmitz, who has had several active listings in the neighborhood recently. The new urbanist shopping district on the southern edge of the neighborhood features townhomes, apartments and condos above and between an array of boutiques, beauty parlors and eateries. But the single-family Craftsman and ranch-style homes lining Wolfe Park’s interior streets are within walking distance of other amenities, too, from the Miracle Mile shopping center and a nearby Target to Bass Lake and the massive park in the neighborhood’s heart. And with stops on Metro Transit bus lines and the pedestrian and bike-friendly Cedar Lake Trail close by, amenities in the greater Twin Cities are within easy reach as well.
Walkable shopping and dining
The Town Green, the shopping center surrounding the Excelsior & Grand apartment complex, is within half a mile of most Wolfe Park homes. Between West 38th Street and Excelsior Boulevard at the southern end of the neighborhood, the Main Street-style shopping district has everything from beauty salons and pharmacies to childcare centers and banks, even eateries. For groceries, there’s a Trader Joe’s on the east end and a Fresh Thyme Market on the west end. Down Excelsior Boulevard, the Miracle Mile shopping center has even more stores and dining options. There’s a Lunds & Byerlys and a Target on the west side of the neighborhood, too.

Fun in the sun and snow
“Minnesotans love to get outdoors, and we love that we have four seasons; there’s something to do in each and every one,” says Schmitz, adding that the park system in nearby Minneapolis offers cross-country and downhill skiing in the winter. But closer to home, The Rec Center, known locally as “the ROC,” has two indoor ice arenas for locals to enjoy regardless of the season. There’s also an aquatic park and reservable community rooms. The neighborhood’s namesake, Wolfe Park, surrounds the ROC, featuring everything from walking trails to sports courts and fields. Near the south end of the park, close to West 38th Street, there’s a Biba Smart Playground, with a big interactive climbing structure that uses a free phone app to encourage play. And the park’s fishing pond is stocked with bluegill, black crappie, largemouth bass and more. “Wolfe Park is super convenient to the Minneapolis lakes, but it has a lake of its own, too,” says Schmitz, referring to Bass Lake, which covers most of the neighborhood’s center. While not as large as some of its Minneapolis counterparts, Bass Lake offers a serene spot for strolling and fishing.

Housing options galore
Prices here start at around $160,000 for a one-bedroom condo unit on the first floor of a 1960s building and climb to more than $590,000 for two-bedroom condos in early 2000s-era buildings with on-site garage parking. There are also single-family Craftsman and ranch-style homes lining the interior residential streets. Sale prices for those run anywhere from $300,000 to more than $600,000. Apartments in modern complexes like Excelsior & Grand start at $1,499 per month. “Excelsior & Grand was touted as the new downtown when it all started being developed,” says Edina Realty’s Susan Melbye, a local Realtor with going on two decades of local experience. Sale prices for the complex’s condos and townhomes, which peek from above and between popular grocery stores, coffee shops and other businesses, start at $250,000.

Twin Cities amenities close to home
Metro Transit bus stops are scattered throughout Wolfe Park, spaced at regular intervals along main thoroughfares like Excelsior Boulevard, West 36th Street and Beltline Boulevard. Part of the 5-mile Cedar Lake Trail meanders through the northern half of the neighborhood. While the trail is currently closed due to construction related to the Metropolitan Council’s Metro Green Line Extension project, there are signs noting alternate routes for walkers and bikers. The trail is expected to be fully reconstructed, including new crossings at Beltline Boulevard, Wooddale Avenue and Blake Road, when the extension project is finished. Wolfe Park is less than 6.5 miles southwest of downtown Minneapolis, a drive that takes about 15 minutes depending on traffic. The Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport is slightly farther; the 16-mile drive southeast takes about 20 minutes in light traffic.
