Fairmeade is a neighborhood about 10 miles east of Louisville in the City of St. Matthews, built after World War II. Homes sit on tree-shaded streets near a busy commercial corridor, connecting the area to shops, parks and medical services, all within about a mile drive. “Property taxes are low, and city services are abundant and of high quality,” says Mary Jo Nay, a council member for the City of St. Matthews. “St. Matthews services, included in the once-a-year payment of property taxes, are a certified police department plus support staff, weekly trash and yard waste disposal, curbside recycling, as well as storm debris pickup.”
Fairmeade’s narrow, tree-lined streets add charm and shade to the neighborhood.

Fairmeade is in the Jefferson County Public Schools district’s Waggener High zone. Several elementary schools are associated with the boundary for Mayme S. Waggener High School, such as St. Matthews Elementary, which earns a C-plus grade from Niche. Parents and guardians must rank their preferences for elementary schools based on schools tied to the high school boundary. Westport Middle School serves the neighborhood; it and Waggener High School receive C grades. After ninth grade, students select one of three academies with career-focused pathways, including pre-nursing, pre-law and computer programming.
Niche gives St. Matthews Elementary School an overall B minus.
Waggener High School has a 14 to 1 student to teacher ratio.

Drives to Louisville, public transit and hospitals nearby
Shelbyville Road, a segment of U.S. Route 60, runs through Fairmeade’s northern region and connects it to Louisville. The Transit Authority of River City (TARC) has bus stops on Shelbyville Road. Interstate 264 ties the area to Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, about 10 miles away, with nonstop flights to national destinations only. Interstate 64 is also nearby and leads to Downtown Louisville, where the minor league baseball stadium, Louisville Slugger Field, is located.
Sports at St. Matthews Community Park and trails through wetlands
Just over a mile from Fairmeade, St. Matthews Community Park spans nearly 46 acres and includes fenced softball and baseball fields, which are home to the St. Matthews Baseball and Softball League. Batting cages, a playground and basketball courts are near the fields. In the park's northern region, a thick forest features an asphalt path and foot bridges that lead over a natural stream. “Brown Park is routinely the most visited park. [It] offers paved walking trails mingled around the historic Beargrass Creek. There are many Mallard and Canadian geese that have taken up residence in and around this park, which allows residents and visitors the opportunity to interact with them,” Nay says. “Baptist Health Hospital abuts this park, and is connected by a small walkway, which invites patients, hospital visitors and employees to an outdoor place to find a quick respite during the difficult periods.” Arthur K. Draut Park also has a trail through the Beargrass Creek wetlands.
Brown Park is one of the most visited parks near Fairmeade.
St. Matthew's Community park has many baseball diamonds to enjoy.

Shelbyville Road Plaza shops, the mall and international fare
About a mile away, Shelbyville Road Plaza shopping center has a Trader Joe’s and retailers varying from World Market to Nordstrom Rack. Mall St. Matthews is a traditional indoor mall near the shopping center with a Dillard’s. A Cinemark theater and restaurant chains, such as Cheesecake Factory, are also at the mall. Local restaurants serve international cuisine, including Oriental House, which has modern takes on Chinese fare and Mojito in Havana Restaurant & Bar with a Cuban-inspired menu.
Oriental House is a longtime favorite for Chinese cuisine near Fairmeade.
Oxmoor Mall provides shopping and dining options close to Fairmeade.
