Hamline-Midway has historic charm and a central location in St. Paul

Hamline-Midway is the halfway point between downtown Saint Paul and downtown Minneapolis, and both are just over 5 miles away. Turn-of-the-20th-century homes and Hamline University give the neighborhood its historic character. You can easily walk to local parks and restaurants along University Avenue, and Saint Paul attractions like Como Park and Allianz Field are minutes away. Public transit and highway access make it easy for commuters to travel across the Twin Cities.

Homes with a lot of character date back to the late 1900s

Strolling along Hamline-Midway’s sidewalks, you’ll see turn-of-the-20th-century homes with well-maintained lawns. Colorful Craftsman styles and Foursquares share the road with bungalows, workers cottages and other Victorian-era houses. “As you get closer to Hamlin University, there are bigger, brick and stone gorgeous 1900 homes,” says Realtor Anna Garnaas-Halvorson with the Hartmann Team at Re/Max Results, who lives in the nearby Frogtown. “Mine’s 1924...but the homes get older as you get closer to campus. They have beautifully landscaped yards, pretty front porches and lots of beautiful gardens.” Back alleys lead to driveways and detached garages, but residents also park on the street.

The median single-family home price is slightly higher than in Frogtown, but less than in Saint Anthony Park and Union Park. Depending on size and condition, prices generally range from the mid-$100,000s to the high $400,000s. There is nearly a 50-50 split between homeowners and renters, with several apartment buildings and duplexes in the area.

Students attend St. Paul public schools and Hamline University

Hamline-Midway is part of the Saint Paul Public School District. Rather than being assigned to schools based on where they live, families apply to their preferred schools, with nearby options such as Como Park Senior High School.

Historic Hamline University is a private, liberal arts school in the neighborhood. It was founded in 1854 and is the first university to open in Minnesota. Residents like Garnaas-Halvorson often walk through campus. “Students love to see the dogs,” she says. “Everybody’s so friendly.”

Walkable neighborhood with Metro Transit and highway access

Like most of the city, Hamline-Midway is considered highly walkable. “You have to go a little bit farther to get to Como Park or Hamline University, but just walking through these beautiful neighborhoods and seeing the parks change as the weather changes, saying hi to people and seeing kids out playing is lovely,” Garnaas-Halvorson says. There is also plenty of public transportation available through the Metro Transit Authority, including:

  • Standard bus routes, which regularly stop throughout the neighborhood
  • The A Line and Bronze Line, bus rapid transit lines along Snelling and University avenues
  • Green Line Light Rail, which has stations along University Avenue
Many residents drive, especially with major thoroughfares like Snelling and University Avenues and access to Interstate 94. It’s only a 15-minute drive to Downtown Saint Paul and downtown Minneapolis.

Residents spend hours at Como Park and neighborhood parks

Living in Hamline-Midway means you are minutes from Como Park, one of Saint Paul’s largest green spaces. “Most people go to Como because of all that it has to offer,” Garnaas-Halvorson says. Not only can you spend hours walking along trails or running around the athletic fields, but you can also visit the Como Park Zoo & Conservatory, which has free admission. Other amenities include a public, 18-hole golf course, an amusement park and the sprawling Como Lake.

There are plenty of smaller parks within the neighborhood. At Horton Park, you’re likely to see residents having a picnic or exploring the arboretum. “That’s a fun one to walk by, and sometimes I’ll let my golden retriever off leash to play fetch,” Garnaas-Halvorson says. Hamline Park has a playground, basketball court and futsal court. You can also head to Can Can Wonderland, a mini-golf course with an arcade.

Local restaurants line major thoroughfares

The heart of Hamline-Midway’s food scene is the Little Africa Business and Cultural District of Minnesota, which is concentrated along Snelling and University avenues. Businesses include:

  • Fasika Restaurant, an Ethiopian restaurant with vegan and vegetarian options
  • Sabrina’s Cafe & Deli, a coffee shop that hosts traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremonies
  • Snelling Cafe, which serves a fusion of Mediterranean, East African and American dishes
  • Addis Market, which specializes in Ethiopian spices and food products
The Little Mekong district in Frogtown has even more options along University Avenue. Garnaas-Halvorson recommends Gabe’s Bar & Kitchen in Como Park because of its community feel. “Everybody there knows your name,” she says. “People from Hamline-Midway, Como Park and Frogtown are all regulars... The patio is open when it’s nice out, and it’s always full.” Besides Addis Market, nearby grocery options include Aldi and Target.

The nearby Allianz Field draws in thousands of people

Allianz Field is just across the street, in the Union Park neighborhood. It is home to the Minnesota Union Football Club, the Loons. The stadium draws thousands of people for every game, but Garnaas-Halvorson says that the crowds are only noticeable when you’re near the field. “People are coming from all over, but it doesn’t really affect our little spot here,” she says.

We moved to Hamline-Midway a little over a year ago. We have since found the best places to shop. We've met wonderful neighbors. The location is close to everything, yet far enough away to have a little small town feel. Freeway access is simple. We love our local market. The community is always there for you too.

It's a great community with quirky and original shops and restaurants. Neighbors are really well connected and the Facebook group for the neighborhood is a really useful tool as a resident. Crime has been an issue, however that comes with living in the middle of the city. The commute to either St.Paul or Minneapolis is great and the light rail has been a awesome public service.
