Como Park, a centrally located St. Paul community with a popular park

Como Park is a Saint Paul neighborhood named for the sprawling park at its center, which is home to the Como Park Zoo & Aquarium. There is a mix of homes, ranging from smaller bungalows to large Victorian-era properties. When not spending time outside, you can grab dinner from one of the local eateries in the neighborhood. Como Park is centrally located, with Downtown Saint Paul less than 5 miles away and downtown Minneapolis less than 10 miles away.

Lake Como, gardens and a zoo are only some of Como Park’s amenities

The namesake Como Regional Park opened over 100 years ago and continues to be one of the city’s main recreational destinations, always buzzing with people. “There are a lot of dog walkers and joggers,” says Realtor Shawn Hartmann, lead of the Hartmann Team at Re/Max Results. “It’s a pretty vibrant community with the park.” While there, you can:

  • Boat or fish on Lake Como
  • Play 18 holes at the public Como Park Golf Course
  • Enjoy kid-friendly rides at Como Town
  • Take advantage of traditional park amenities like ballfields and a playground
  • Go skiing and sledding during the winter.
Como Park Zoo and Conservatory is in the park, where you can visit the animals or walk through the different gardens. “It’s a great place to bring a family, especially younger kids,” Hartmann says. The zoo, which is part of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, has free admission, but Hartmann says it takes donations.

Housing styles vary from bungalows to Craftsman and Victorians

A walk along Como Park’s sidewalks reveals a variety of homes from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. “A lot of people love the north side of Como Park,” says Hartmann, who used to live in the neighborhood. “You’re going to have a lot of 1940s-built bungalows there.” The west side of the neighborhood has more Craftsman and Foursquare styles, while you will find more turn-of-the-century Victorian-era construction closest to the park. “People really like that because, when you’re walking on the lake, those homes add a lot of extra charm,” Hartmann says.

The median single-family price is higher than in nearby communities like Hamline-Midway, but lower than in Summit Hill. “It’s my opinion that it’s the best value neighborhood in Saint Paul,” Hartmann says. “The prices are a bit lower than in some of the higher-tier neighborhoods in Saint Paul. You’re in the middle, but for what you get for the money? I mean, people love it.” Depending on size and condition, you can expect to pay between the high $100,000s and the mid-$600,000s. However, some of the lakefront homes are priced in the $800,000s. Townhouses and condos are less common, and typically range from the high $100,000s to the high $300,000s.

Residents attend Como Park events and the Minnesota State Fair

The park hosts plenty of events throughout the year, from seasonal flower shows to the Groovin’ in the Garden free summer music series. Every year, the zoo celebrates Earth Day with Party for the Planet. There are interactive learning stations, crafts and other kid-friendly activities.

Living in Como Park also means you are minutes from Falcon Heights, home of the Minnesota State Fair. This 12-day festival includes live music, 4-H showcases, carnival rides and the well-known Princess Kay butter sculptures.

Saint Paul Public Schools and the University of Minnesota are nearby

The neighborhood is part of the Saint Paul Public School District. Families apply to their preferred schools, and priority enrollment is given to students based on factors like proximity and interest in magnet programs. Nearby options include Como Park Senior High School, which offers programs like the Academy of Finance. You are also minutes from the University of Minnesota’s Saint Paul campus in Falcon Heights.

Locals can easily commute across the Twin Cities

While the neighborhood itself is walkable, many residents drive. “It’s a great spot for Minneapolis and Saint Paul commuters,” says Francesco Marraffa, Realtor and owner of Kilt Real Estate Group. It’s about a 10-minute drive to downtown Saint Paul and a 15-minute drive to downtown Minneapolis. Como Avenue offers a straight shot into Minneapolis, and you can take Snelling Avenue to Interstate 94. Locals also take the Metro Transit bus or ride their bikes.

Eateries include a seasonal ice cream shop and Bolé Ethiopian Cuisine

“There’s a wide range of great food options and restaurants,” Marraffa says. Options include:

  • Abogados Gourmet Coffee Bar & Mercadito, where the drinks have law-themed names
  • Dock & Paddle, a lakeside restaurant that regularly has live music
  • Conny’s Creamy Cone, a seasonal soft-serve place
  • Bolé Ethiopian Cuisine, where the menu includes kitfo and doro wat
  • Colossal Cafe, a bakery that also serves breakfast and lunch
Marraffa recommends Colossal Cafe, saying, “If you like cinnamon rolls, stop by, but only buy one for your entire group. They are gigantic!” Residents head to the Como Park Farmers’ Market for fresh produce and other local vendors on Thursday afternoons from May through October and do the rest of their grocery shopping at Aldi. Hartmann says locals head to Roseville for more shopping and dining, especially if they need to visit big-box stores like Target.
