Hazel Park is a family-friendly neighborhood on St. Paul’s East Side

Hazel Park is a small neighborhood on the East Side of Saint Paul near highly rated schools, parks and restaurants. Homes that cost less than most of the city attract both homeowners and renters. You can bring the kids to Phalen Regional Park and head to White Bear Avenue for groceries or dinner. Public transportation and highway access make it easy to travel the 5 miles to Downtown Saint Paul and 15 miles to downtown Minneapolis.

Homes from the early and mid-1900s cost less than most of the city

Sidewalks line Hazel Park’s residential streets, making it easy for residents to walk from their homes to the neighborhood park. “It’s just a big community that really wants to support one another,” says Lupe Dominguez Gonzalez, a Realtor with the Hartmann Team at Re/Max Results who grew up on the East Side. “You still see kids playing in the road with their basketball.” Most properties were built between the early and mid-20th century, including bungalows and Craftsman styles. “Bungalows are relatively common, and there are some 1970s split-entry houses,” says Mai Vang, a Realtor with eXp Realty and longtime Saint Paul resident. “There’s not much newer construction because most of the community is already densely developed.” Back alleys lead to driveways and detached garages, although ranch-style houses and split-levels tend to have attached garages.

Depending on size and condition, you can expect to pay between the low $100,000s and the mid-$300,000s. “You can find a nice home at that price point,” Dominguez Gonzalez says. The median single-family home price is on par with East Side neighborhoods like Beaver Lake Heights and Parkway-Greenbrier, but is less than Saint Paul’s median. Nearly half of the residents rent.

Schools in the area include a highly rated French immersion school

Students in the Saint Paul Public School District are not assigned to schools based on where they live. Families instead apply to schools they are interested in, and priority is given to students based on their interest in specialty programs and proximity to the school. Hazel Park Preparatory Academy, which serves prekindergarten through eighth grade, and the highly rated L’Etoile du Nord French Immersion school are in the neighborhood.

Downtown St. Paul is 10 minutes away

While the neighborhood itself is walkable, you’ll need to drive or take the bus to get around the Twin Cities. White Bear Avenue connects with Interstate 94, which leads 10 minutes to downtown Saint Paul and 30 minutes to downtown Minneapolis. The Metro Transit bus stops along White Bear Avenue and Seventh Street. There is an industrial railroad in the neighborhood, so residents can sometimes hear the freight train.

Hazel Park has a playground and after-school programs

The neighborhood is home to Hazel Park, which has a recreation center. “You have all kinds of sports, events, anything you can think of,” Dominguez Gonzalez says. “The only thing is that it’s just kind of tucked away...but it does attract a lot of attention.” While there, you can:

  • Let your kids run around the playground
  • Play a pick-up game on the basketball court
  • Cheer on your friends at a baseball game
  • Sign up for after-school or summer childcare through Rec Check
  • Join a sports league at the recreation center
Vang says that the neighborhood is “very family-friendly. There’s not a lot of nightlife, but there are good parks that people can walk to.” Another nearby option is the sprawling Phalen Regional Park in Payne-Phalen. Besides offering amenities such as Lake Phalen and a public 18-hole golf course, the park hosts popular celebrations like the Dragon Festival. Every July, people from across the Twin Cities come to participate in a dragon boat race before attending more Asian-Pacific artistic, athletic and educational events.

White Bear Avenue has local groceries and restaurants

White Bear Avenue is one of the main commercial corridors on the East Side. The mix of stores and restaurants includes:

  • NL Oriental Food & Deli, which is known for its papaya salad
  • Supermercado Loma Bonita, which sells Mexican bread and groceries
  • The Little Oven, which serves Italian food
  • 1Tou3 Pho, which is a Vietnamese restaurant
  • The Cherry Pit Bar & Grill, which has a pet-friendly patio
Domingue Gonzalez says she often shops at Loma Bonita and that local groceries are one of the main draws of the area. Residents also head to Hmong Village, an indoor market with fresh produce, traditional Hmong clothes and restaurants. “It’s like a little flea market in there,” Dominguez Gonzalez says.
