Dayton’s Bluff is a colorful neighborhood next to downtown St. Paul

Dayton’s Bluff is a community-driven part of Saint Paul that overlooks the Mississippi River. This walkable neighborhood next to Downtown has no shortage of things to do, with green spaces like Swede Hollow Park, restaurants along Seventh Street and Hmong Village. Events like neighborhood cleanups and Fiesta Latina give residents plenty of opportunities to come together. Downtown Saint Paul is 2 miles away, while downtown Minneapolis is 10 miles away.

Renters and homeowners live in Dayton’s Bluff

Over 50% of Dayton’s Bluff residents rent, including Tim Marino, community organizer with the Dayton’s Bluff Community Council (DBCC). “I like living in Dayton’s Bluff because it feels like there’s a good mix of things in there, and there’s a cohesion with that mix,” he says. Turn-of-the-century homes, like bungalows, Craftsman styles and workers’ cottages, are common, but you can find some midcentury ranch-style homes and Garrison Colonials. Townhouses, duplexes and apartment complexes are scattered throughout the neighborhood.

The median sale price for a single-family home is on par with East Side neighborhoods like Payne-Phalen and Parkway-Greenbrier. Depending on size and condition, prices range from the mid-$100,000s to the low $500,000s for single-family and multifamily properties. Townhouses generally cost between the high $100,000s and the low $300,000s.

Students can attend the highly rated Capitol Hill Magnet School

As part of the Saint Paul Public School District, families apply to their preferred schools rather than attending an assigned one. Priority enrollment is given to students based on factors like interest in magnet programs, and nearby options include the highly rated Capitol Hill Magnet School. Metro State University, a public university with over 60 undergraduate and 20 graduate programs, has its main campus in the neighborhood.

Commuters take public transportation, carshares and Interstate 94

Dayton’s Bluff is designed to be pedestrian-friendly. “It’s one of the old streetcar neighborhoods of Saint Paul,” Marino says. “So, it still has that walkable feel, especially in the western part of Dayton’s Bluff.” Metro Transit offers high-frequency bus routes and the Gold Line Bus Rapid Transit along Interstate 94. Another option is Evie, a nonprofit carshare network in the Twin Cities. “It’s cheaper than an Uber, and you pick it up and drop it off like it’s a Lime scooter,” Marino says. Taking Interstate 94 gets you to downtown Saint Paul in under 10 minutes and downtown Minneapolis in 20 minutes.

Plenty of outdoor recreation in Dayton’s Bluff

Like most Saint Paul neighborhoods, Dayton’s Bluff has no shortage of parks. Both Margaret Park and Wicahapi have amenities like playgrounds, picnic shelters and athletic courts and fields, but more people know Wicahapi for its historic Sioux burial ground and scenic overlook. “There are some amazing views of downtown and over the riverside,” Marino says. “In my opinion, it’s the best view in Saint Paul.” At Dayton’s Bluff Recreation Center, you can sign up for gaming clubs, crafting groups and free after-school and summer childcare programs and regular free meal distributions. Swede Hollow Park is a natural escape with multiuse trails, a stream and arch bridges. “That place is an absolute gem,” Marino says. “It really feels like you walk a little bit of distance and you’re in a completely different part of the world than in the middle of the city.” As a Minneapolis native, he compares it to the Minnehaha Creek area in Hiawatha. After visiting the park, you can get coffee at Swede Hollow Cafe.

The DBCC regularly schedules park cleanups and helps maintain a community garden, but that is only part of what it does. Marino says that the DBCC acts as a go-between for residents and the city council, including advocating for businesses impacted by Seventh Street renovations and ensuring that public transportation reaches as many people as possible.

Murals and restaurants line Seventh Street

Colorful murals decorate the Intertribal Cultural Corridor, a stretch of supermarkets, restaurants and businesses along Seventh Street. “A lot of the murals reflect different aspects of the community, and it’s always cool to walk by, even if you’ve seen it many times before,” Marino says. Businesses in the corridor include"

  • Mañana Restaurant, which has Salvadorian dishes like pupusas
  • Centromex Supermercado, a locally owned grocery store
  • La Michoacana Purepecha, which serves ice cream, popsicles and aqua frescas
  • Cafeto, a coffee shop with sandwiches, pastries and locally roasted beans
  • Indigenious Roots Cultural Arts Center, a community gathering space
There are more restaurants and breweries across Dayton’s Bluff, including at Hmong Village, an indoor market with over 200 vendors selling food, clothes and fresh produce.

Locals come together for events like Fiesta Latina

Every September, the Comunidades Latinas Unidas en Servicio hosts Fiesta Latina, a day-long festival that draws thousands of people to the neighborhood. Programming includes fun activities like live music, folkloric dancing and an art market, as well as community resources like a job fair and free medical exams.

Another popular event is Art in the Hollow, a free art festival held at Swede Hollow Park every June. You can listen to live music, watch real-time plein air painting and admire work from over 100 artists.

Parks have been neglected. Lot of amenities that should be working aren't. There is not really a sense of community I get while living here as most of the units are rentals. I do like the commute time as it's close to 94 and the neighborhood has been slowly improving with more investment coming into the area.

At least my street, good neighbors, fairly quiet. What I would like to see changed is the crime rate around loud area.
