Waterfront community with diverse architecture and strong neighborhood association
"It originally was not called Bahama Shores," says Kent Rodahaver, a Real Estate Broker with NextHome South Pointe and a former resident of Bahama Shores. "It was developed as a beachfront resort called Alta Marina. There's a huge diversity in architecture and an excellent pride in ownership, plus the neighborhood association is strong; it's a great association." Bahama Shore's location on the waterfront was a major draw for Alta Marina's developers and continues to be a significant draw for homebuyers today. On top of the scenic waterfront views and proximity to downtown St. Pete, the Bahama Shores Neighborhood Association hosts regular events in a park that is owned and maintained by community members.
Forested suburb lined with mid-century ranches and Mediterranean villas
While most of the neighborhood is not waterfront property, all residents have access to the shore thanks to the neighborhood association. Most homes have variations of the mid-century ranch-style. However, a handful of homes have a Mediterranean-revival or contemporary motif. "No two homes are the same," says Rodahaver, "they were all pretty much custom built back when the neighborhood was developed, all by renowned architects." The original developers wanted the neighborhood to feel as grand as the original resort, featuring large home lots with a minimum length and width of 100 feet. Residents have ample yard space and often have in-ground pools and views of the bay. Waterfront homes have even more lot space and private docks for fishing and boating. The neighborhood is also home to a retirement community, Westminster Shores, which features modest Mediterranean-revival villas and apartments with access to an outdoor pool and athletic facilities. Prices have consistently trended higher than the Tampa Metro Area and the national average home prices, from $700,000 for an inland ranch-style house with 1,900 square feet to as much as $1.2 and $2.6 million for a large waterfront home with 2,500 or more square feet.
Top marks at Pinellas County Schools
The Pinellas County School District serves the area through all grade levels. Bay Vista Fundamental Elementary earned a B-plus rating on Niche and has a curriculum based on essential critical thinking skills. Students move on to middle and high schools such as Bay Point Middle and Lakewood High, which have a B-minus and A-minus rating on Niche, respectively. Lakewood High offers several Magnet programs, including a Center for Advanced Technologies that teaches robotics and was recognized as a Magnet School of Distinction in 2024.
Picnics at Dolphin Park and hiking through mangrove forests
Palm tree leaves sway over Bahama Shores’ sidewalks as they wind through to neighborhood green spaces. "The neat thing about the community is there is a neighborhood-owned park," says Rodahaver, referring to Dolphin Park. "A local donated a vacant lot that is now maintained as a park by the community." Residents can relax, watch the sunrise or spot dolphins jumping in the bay. Just north of Dolphin Park is the Little Bayou Preserve, where visitors can walk through a mature mangrove forest or reel some fish in from the bayou. Local athletes can head to Lake Vista Recreation Center, which has lighted ball fields and basketball courts, a skatepark, a public pool and an indoor recreation center.
Shopping and dining around the Skyway Marina District
Residents only have to take a ten-minute drive east down 54th Avenue to shops and national chain stores in the Skyway Marina District. One popular dining option is Tiki Docks Skyway, a colorful spot on the marina with Polynesian-décor and live music performances paired with fresh seafood. Staple groceries and other necessities are available at national chains like Publix.
Easy downtown commutes along 4th Street
Bahama Shores is situated on the southern tip of the Pinellas Peninsula. 4th Street runs five miles north, leading to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital and Downtown St. Petersburg, with public bus stops all along the street. Commuters drive three miles down 54th Street to I-275, which provides routes to St. Pete-Clearwater International and the Frankland Bridge.
Important to Know
The CAP Index has given Bahama Shores a crime score of 2 out of 10, much lower than the national average of 4 out of 10. This community and the wider Tampa Bay region have a high-risk rating for coastal flooding and intense storms. Waterfront communities saw massive storm surges and flooding due to Hurricane Ian in 2022 and Hurricane Idalia in 2023. St. Petersburg and other cities around Tampa Bay have invested millions of dollars into infrastructure to mitigate damage from coastal flooding due to strong storms and sea level rise.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
