A private island-esque enclave in eastern St. Pete
When it comes to waterfront living on the Gulf Coast, St. Petersburg and Clearwater tend to receive most of the spotlight. However, a small enclave in St. Pete is quietly becoming the latest hot spot for homebuyers to plant roots. Harbor Isle sits on the tip of an inland peninsula on the eastern shores of St. Petersburg, surrounded by Riviera Bay. The primarily residential neighborhood offers bay views and is adjacent to the Weedon Island State Preserve and several other islands. “Most people tend to overlook neighborhoods on the eastern coast of St. Pete because they don’t have the sandy beaches,” says Helle Hartley, a Realtor at Century 21 Jim White & Associates, with over 275 closed sales in the area. “That’s why I call Harbor Isle a hidden gem.” Despite living off the beaten path, residents can reach downtown and its amenities within 6 miles.

Surrounded by fishing and hiking opportunities and a 3,000-acre preserve
Surrounded by deep salt-water canals and bayous, Harbor Isle offers boating, fishing and hiking opportunities. Rivera Bay, which feeds into Bayou Grande and Tampa Bay, is frequented by kayakers, powerboat owners and deep-sea anglers. St. Pete’s Blueway Trail System provides boaters a path through mangrove-forested preserves. Northeast Park is 2 miles south of Harbor Isle and has a playground, batting cages and three baseball fields. The park’s most prominent features are two golf courses. City-owned Mangrove Bay is a public 18-hole course spread across 180 acres. Cypress Links Golf Course, also owned by the city, is a public 9-hole course with a pro shop and driving range. Riviera Bay Park is 5 miles from the community and has hiking trails, basketball and tennis courts, a community garden and picnic shelters. The 3,000-acre Weedon Island Preserve is 7 miles east. Along the western shore of Tampa Bay, the preserve has nearly 5 miles of trails, a fishing pier and a 45-foot observation tower that provides views of the bay and preserve. The 4-mile South Paddling Trail meanders through tunnels within the preserve and has access points along the bay. There’s also an Osprey Viewing Area, a small overlook to spot nestling ospreys in trees. The Cultural and Natural History Center sits deep inside the preserve and has interpretive hikes, workshops, exhibits and various programs about the island’s past.

Traditional and custom-built waterfront homes
The horseshoe-shaped community of over 200 homes has a lake in the middle. Its quiet, tree-lined streets are filled with traditional Craftsman-style homes, ranch-style homes and custom-built estates. Most houses were built in the late 1970s. Before development, the land was connected to Weedon Island by a bridge. Prices range from the low-$600,000s for a three-bedroom over 2,000 square feet to over $2 million for a 3,000-square-foot, four-bedroom waterfront property. “The prices are way more affordable than similar houses on the Gulf,” says Hartley. The neighborhood’s irregular shape is intentional, ensuring nearly 90 percent of the houses have waterfront access. Lot sizes are spacious; almost all span up to a quarter-acre with backyards that lead to private boat docks. Most homes have multi-car garages, in-ground pools and spacious driveways for boats or recreational vehicles.

Vibrant shopping and dining district 5 miles away
While Harbor Isle is primarily residential, the vibrant 4th Street Corridor is 5 miles away – either by car or venturing across the bay. “People who live on the water have great boating access to Downtown St. Pete,” says Clay Glover, Founder of Glover Real Estate Group, who’s been selling homes in the area for over a decade. “It’s 10 minutes by water, so a lot of people just lower their boats and go have dinner. You can’t really do that in a lot of other places.” Publix, Walgreens and Trader Joe’s are located along this commercial strip, along with a diverse selection of restaurants, shops and bars. El Cap Restaurant is popular for burgers, chili dogs and shoestring fries. Red Mesa Restaurant serves modern Mexican fare and is known for its seafood enchiladas and sangria. McArthur’s Irish Pub is a local nighttime favorite. CALI offers a healthy California-inspired menu in an airy dining room, including Ahi Tuna bowls and sourdough pizzas. Downtown St. Petersburg is 6 miles south for more entertainment and shopping options.

Interstate 275 is 4 miles west of the community, connecting to the Howard Frankland Bridge and providing access to the rest of the area. Downtown St. Petersburg is 6 miles south, St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport is 10 miles away, and Tampa is a 19-mile drive.
