A suburban enclave close to downtown St. Petersburg
Roughly 2 miles northwest of downtown St. Petersburg, Ponce De Leon is a classic ’60s suburb in Florida. The small but fairly dense grid of midcentury homes and 55-plus communities sits between two major roadways: 34th Street (also U.S. Highway 19) and Interstate 275. Even though downtown is a short journey away by car or bus, the neighborhood enjoys plenty of commercial activity of its own, which helps keep residents close to home. “And don’t forget the beaches,” says Realtor Kathy Bombard with Century 21. "There's access to a lot of shopping in the area and tons of good restaurants, too.”
Midcentury ranchers and more for less
Among the tranquil streets and green lawns, white picket fences guard small patches of laurel oaks and palm trees. Deep, quarter-acre lots leave enough space to fit modestly sized midcentury homes, and often a backyard pool, too. Single-story ranchers and bungalows are the most common designs, usually with a carport included. Split-levels and a handful of Cape Cods can also be found in residential areas, as well as a small number of new builds that maintain the neighborhood's midcentury mode. Supply is often limited, especially since most move-in ready homes in the neighborhood tend to sell for less than the rest of St. Petersburg. “I don’t see too many sales in this area, so I’d say once people buy, they tend to stick around," Bombard says. Buyers can expect to pay $275,000 to $550,000 for a move-in ready rancher or bungalow, while some in need of repairs often sell for $170,000 to $270,000. Ponce De Leon also has a 55-plus community of manufactured homes, with prices beginning at $10,000 for a one-bedroom, one-bath.
Mazzaro's Italian Market and many more groceries
East of the neighborhood is a small concentration of low industrial spaces, mostly occupied by building and landscaping contractors. Residents travel to any other side of the neighborhood to reach shopping and dining options A dense collection of supermarket chains sits adjacent to the neighborhood on 34th Street, offering locations for Publix, Winn-Dixie, Sam's Club and ALDI. For lunch, many residents venture over to Chile Verde and order extra green sauce for their carne asada tacos. In the evening, The Potion Portal serves up craft beer and games with friends, including air hockey and foosball. But the real gem of Ponce De Leon is Mazzaro's Italian Market, which has an outdoor patio and cafe that is "always jamming," says Realtor Adam Benmbark of Keller Williams St. Pete. "It's partly the vibe, but it's also because they carry imported goods and have a bakery where they make everything fresh."
Teen clubs and church bike rides
Major neighborhood events do not occur very frequently, but there are small and casual ways to meet one's neighbors throughout the week. Gladden Park and Recreation Center is a major meeting place for residents, especially the neighborhood's youngest locals, who attend annual summer camps and join carpools for programs before and after school. Teen Council meetings give local youth a say in the planning of city events. Meanwhile, churchgoers gather for potlucks, book clubs and group bike rides. "There are churches almost every 2 to 3 blocks, which get people together," Benmbark says.
Tech-savvy schools
Students in the neighborhood begin at New Heights Elementary, which has a C-plus rating from Niche and offers multiple special programs, including a STEM academy. For grades 6-8, students move up to Tyrone Middle, which also has a C-plus rating. Once they reach ninth grade, students head to A-rated St. Petersburg High School. In addition to being listed on the National Register of Historic Places, St. Petersburg High also offers several unique programs, including a Center for Construction Technologies.
Shuffleboard showdowns at Gladden Park
There are no parks within Ponce De Leon, but there are options close by. 3 blocks west of Ponce De Leon, residents frequently head to Gladden Park and Recreation Center for their favorite sports activities, including horseshoe, shuffleboard and basketball. The park is also a hot spot for outdoor workouts, thanks to a fitness trail with all-weather equipment. On rainy days, the park's indoor facilities host dance classes and other activities.
Major roadways and public transit alternatives
Ponce de Leon is situated between the two major arteries of 34th Street and I-275. "It's really easy to get onto the highway. It's also within 7 to 10 minutes of downtown St. Petersburg," Benmbark says. Residents who do not own a car can use multiple bus routes that make stops in and around the neighborhood.
Things to consider
Everyday life in Ponce De Leon comes with noise and congestion. Traffic slowdowns on 34th Street and I-275 are frequent, especially during peak commuting hours, which causes noise to spill onto residential streets.
